HENRY SCHAEFER Obituary

SCHAEFER HENRY WILLIAM SCHAEFER Henry William Schaefer died peacefully on December 16, 2021 in Springfield, Virginia at the age of 85. Henry is survived by his children David (Margret) Schaefer, Linda (Richard) Tambellini and Ellen (Gary) Green, and his grandchildren Travis Schaefer, Michael (Jaclyn) Schaefer, Nicholas Tambellini, Makena Green and Allison Green. He is preceded in death by his second wife, Elaine Barber Schaefer and his parents Henry and Pauline Schaefer. Henry was born on February 14, 1936 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He graduated from University of Rhode Island in 1958 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He met and married his first wife Adele in Charlottesville, Virginia and began work as an engineer at Sperry Rand Corporation. After moving to Alexandria, Virginia, in 1965 Henry began a long career working at Fort Belvoir as a mechanical engineer for construction equipment. He served as a Contracting Officers Representative for the Family of Military Engineer Construction Equipment under contract with Lockheed. Henry retired from the government in 1995 and worked for a short time for Radian Corporation. He married Elaine in 1986 and finished out his career working part-time in the financial department at the Urban Land Institute. After Elaine's death in 2009, Henry moved to the Greenspring community in 2010. He was an active and dedicated member in the church there. He loved playing bridge as often as he could. Over his years at Greenspring, he played on Wii bowling teams, participated in the Whiskers club, engaged in the computer club, and enjoyed many meals with friends. When Henry's kidneys failed in 2012 and had to go on dialysis, he didn't let that slow him down. Even while navigating the 3 times a week structure of dialysis, he still traveled to see family in Texas and Florida. Henry valued education for his children and grandchildren, always encouraging them to pursue their goals. His support and encouragement led to all his children and grandchildren earning college degrees. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Monday, December 20 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at Greenspring, with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Henry's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Greenspring Benevolent Fund at 7410 Spring Village Drive, Springfield, VA 22150. The family would like to thank Fresenius Dialysis Lorton staff and the Metropolitan Nephrology Associates for his care these last nine years. He was a fellow usher at Fairlington UMC and we talked on the phone.

After one year since Henry's passing, memories are still very much a part of our family.

I am so sorry to learn of Henry´s passing. Unfortunately, I was recovering from Knee Replacement Surgery, so I was unable to attend the Memorial service at Greenspring. Henry was my daughter´s Godfather, along with his deceased wife, Elaine. Henry was a kind and caring friend. He will be missed.

Henry was a big part of our family, especially after marrying our sister, Elaine, who always said Henry was the love of her life. They were able to travel a lot when Elaine worked with Urban Land Institute, and also enjoyed traveling to Germany to visit Henry's relatives.
Many years were spent together during their vacation time in Florida, and Henry continued to support and visit at Eagle Lake after Elaine's death.
Henry and our family stayed in contact and Nancy enjoyed several conversations each month talking about our families. Henry was incredibly proud of his children and grandchildren. Stories were always upbeat and told of the love and accomplishments of all.
We will miss Henry and know he is at peace after a long, caring life, giving much to the world in his time here.
Love to Ellen, Linda, David and all your families.
Nancy, Sister-in-Law

On behalf of his church family at Fairlington UMC, please accept our sympathy during this time of profound grief. Henry and Elaine were faithful attendees at our 9:30am worship service, where Henry served as an usher for countless years. He has been and will continue to be missed.
