VAN ARTHUR WENTE
Van Arthur Wente, 87, of Bethesda, MD, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, September 30, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer. Beloved husband of 50 years to Jane Wente; loving father of Gretchen Alexander and Robert Wente; father-in-law of Jack Alexander and Anita Wiehr Wente; and grandfather of Charlie, Jane, Jimmy, and Tommy Alexander. Van retired in 1989 as Director of NASA's Scientific and Technical Information Division. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 2, 2012 at Concord-St. Andrews United Methodist Church, 5910 Goldsboro Rd., Bethesda, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Concord-St. Andrews United Methodist Church, c/o Dr. Samuel Springer, Music Director, 5910 Goldsboro Rd., Bethesda, MD 20817.

Shortly before I became the Administrator of the Defense Technical Information Center in 1964 the retiring Administrator took me around to introduce me to three important people in management of Federal Scientific and Technical Information (STI). Van was one of the three. I served with Van in a interagency committee known as CENDI and on an STI committee of NATO. CENDI is an interagency group of senior managers from 13United States federal agencies. CENDI managers cooperate by exchanging information and ideas, collaborating to address common issues, and undertaking joint initiatives. In 1985, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the four charter agencies and CENDI was established. From this small core of STI managers, CENDI has grown to its current membership, which represents the major science agencies, the national libraries, and agencies involved in the dissemination and long-term management of scientific and technical information. The vision of Van which helped to create CENDI, his expertise in the field, and his advice and counsel to me whenever needed helped me grow into better administrator. My wife and I offer our condolences to his family.
