I first met Henry Niese when he was scoutmaster for Troop 944. I spent a lot of time at his house. For his teachings, sweat lodges and his birthday party. Henry was a very kind person.

Grandpa Henry was special to many. He helped me find my first Sweat lodge. The time I spent at his home in Maryland during his lodge was always special. He was a very respectful person who was a good example for all to follow. His humbleness was always something that stood out. I'm very grateful to have got to know him through those experiences. His memory will always keep him alive in our hearts.

In 1976 I bought my first "real" painting, from the Grippi Gallery on East 59 th St. in New York City. It was fabulous! I loved/love it!
Joe Grippi told me that the Whitney Museum had been interested in it because they were collecting the artist, Henry Niese, but they decided against this painting because it was only signed on the back, and not signed on the front. So I got a good price on it. One day I was sitting in front of it telling someone about this, and the person said, "Well I see his signature! And not just once, but twice! There subtly in the table ledge, and in the corner where he smudged it out, and changed his mind to put it in the table ledge!" Indeed, that is so. My gorgeous Henry Niese painting is signed! It is a scene looking down on the Bowery. Apparently he had a studio overlooking this area. This painting has been front and center in my home now for almost 50 years! As others come and go into the storage unit, the Henry Niese is ALWAYS in the house! It used to be next to a ficus tree, that merged with the one he painted, and together they were fantastic!
I have another one of his that I also got from the Grippi Gallery, smaller of a forest.
I regret that I never had the good fortune to meet this incredible artist, and apparently wonderful human being! Obviously, he has been a presence in my life.
