James Conamo Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Custer-Glenn Funeral Home Inc on Mar. 16, 2026.
James Oren Smith (Conamo) died peacefully on February 28, 2026.

Jim was exceptionally bright, wonderfully inquisitive and broadly read. He was an inventive, brilliant engineer who had broad interests not only in science but also in economics, history, politics, current events and other areas.

He was loyal to his friends and always eager to have a conversation (or debate) across his many fields of interest.

Jim was the first child of Ellen Ruth Newell Smith and Lloyd Heaston Smith, born at home on June 19, 1941, at their farm outside of Sherrodsville, Ohio.

He was pre-deceased by his sister Ruth and brother Ernest.

He is survived by his brother Lanty and by numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

After graduation from Conotton Valley High School, he earned a scholarship and his degree in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University.

Through the years, he took classes to stay abreast of technological advances, consistently upgrading his knowledge and skills.

He worked in the engineering profession for many years, always seeking opportunities to apply his creativity.

Jim's family expresses deep appreciation to the staff members at Wayne County Care Center for their compassion and excellent care for him.

Contributions in Jim's memory may be made to the Spastic Paraplegia Foundation, Inc., 6952 Claybourne Drive, O'Fallon, MO 63368.
