Kent Riley Obituary

Kent J. Riley of Lexington, after a lengthy illness on June 30, 2014. Husband of Heather A. Multhaupt-Riley, son of Patricia (Smith) Riley of Lansing, MI and the late Jack Riley. Stepson of Cathy Riley. Son-in-law of Michael and Diana Multhaupt of Paw Paw, MI. Father of Galen M. Riley and Erica S. Riley of Lexington. Brother of Karon Siano of Bath, MI and K. Jack Riley of Pittsburg, PA. Kent graduated from the University of Michigan, where he and his wife, Heather met, then they moved east to pursue his Masters and PhD in Nuclear Engineering from MIT. He worked for many years as a Nuclear Engineer at MIT and upon receiving his diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma, transferred his energies to the medical field, becoming a Medical Physicist in the Radiation Oncology Department of Mass General Hospital. An avid supporter of Big Blue, Kent was also a passionate hockey supporter. For many years, he served on the board of directors and as a coach in the Lexington/Bedford Youth Hockey program, coaching both his son and daughter and many of their friends. Kent was a cheerful, loving, and dedicated father who beamed with pride while watching his children Galen and Erica whiz around the rink. Although Kent achieved tremendous academic and professional success, he has been described as a very intelligent everyman, he could put anyone at ease with his dry sense of humor and quick wit. He enriched the lives of his academic colleagues through his technical and scientific expertise, admirable traits of character and pleasant nature. His large social network had the benefit of a playful, loyal friend, with the ability to explain nuclear energy to those less technical, and he was always happy to share a good beer. In addition, Kent leaves extended loving family, sister and brother-in-law Trisha and Ryan Buell of Lexington, MA, Lisa and David Wilson of Rome, GA, nieces Olivia, Sophia, Kathryn, Darcy and nephew Lucas son of Karon and John Siano. Friends are invited to share stories or simply pay their respects to his family at a remembrance to be held on Monday evening, July 7th at 7:00 pm at Waxy OConnors, Hartwell Avenue, Lexington, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: MGH Multiple Myeloma Research Fund, c/o Development Office, 165 Cambridge Street, Suite 600, Boston, MA 02114.

Pat and the Riley family,
I can only imagine the heartbreak of losing a son would be. In as much my
heart is broken for you. I did not know Kent but as I read the guest book
it is very apparent that he was a gift
to each family member, students in study and those he worked with.
Surely he knew he was loved. I hope that brings comfort to you Pat and your
family.

Dear Heather, Galen, Erica, Pat, Cathy, Karon, Jack, and to all those that knew Kent,

I met Kent in college, where we were randomly matched as roommates. It was such a great fit, that we chose to live together for all 4 years - every moment of whice was positive. I remember his excitement when he first met Heather, and could still feel that same love when he spoke of her to me just a couple months ago. He was so proud of his children and the potential they have created for themselves. He was an inspirational man in all disciplines of life, to all whose lives he touched. I miss him.

Kent was role model to me in the Lexington Bedford hockey program. I appreciated his low-key approach to coaching and dedication. He took on so many roles for the organization, the really tough ones: registrar, clinic coordinator, girls coordinator. I admired his decency, approach-ability, intelligence, compassion, and sense of humor, all of which came out in working with him. It has been a privilege to have known him.

Condolences to Heather, Galen, and Erica.

My deepest sympathies to the Riley family. Kent and my brother Chris were great friends growing up and I always marveled at not just how smart he was, but how he carried himself with such a high level of sincerity and maturity. RIP Kent, you made a lasting impression on those around you that will never be forgotten.

Kent was a close friend of mine during high school. I knew he was destined for great success in his life from the day I met him. He marveled all of his friends by his deep knowledge of extremely complex subjects in nuclear energy and physics, all while sitting around a campfire sharing a good German beer. We lost a great friend and amazing scientist. My prayers are with your family

Kent was a resident in our medical physics program, of which I was director when he entered the program. He had just the right personality to be a medical physicist - understanding and empathy for other people with a quiet personality that allowed him to interact well with everyone at the hospital. We have missed his gentle presence for many months and are devastated by this news. He will long be remembered.
