Lola Durazo Obituary

Lola Nell (Barker) Durazo

December 16, 1935 - January 22, 2021

Lola (Barker) Durazo passed away on January 22, 2021 in her home in Somerton, Arizona, where she and her husband Raul Durazo, Sr. raised their four children. Lola was born in 1935 in Florence, Arizona. She graduated from Chandler High in 1953 and went on to obtain her Elementary Education degree within 3 years from Arizona State College (Arizona State College became Arizona State University in 1958). While she was in college, Lola met her future husband, Raul, in a Spanish Literature class. They married in 1957 and lived in Douglas, Arizona. They also lived in Tucson and Yuma before moving to Somerton in 1971.

Lola was an elementary teacher at James B. Rolle and O.L. Carlisle schools. In addition to her teaching, Lola enjoyed multiple creative outlets such as playing the piano and organ, painting, drawing (including caricatures), sewing, writing and cooking. One of the things that Lola was most known for was making dolls that resembled people. She made dolls for brides, family and friends.

After her teaching career, she stayed busy with her art and sewing as well as providing English lessons to seminarians, being a docent for the Century House Museum, gardening, bird watching, raising turtles and spending time with family. She was an avid reader who also loved music, nature and history.

Lola was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Edna Barker and her grandson, Adam Brooks Anderholt.

Lola is survived by her husband of nearly 64 years Raul and their four children; Laura (Dennis) Murcko, Gloria (Brooks) Anderholt, Raul Jr. (Ana) Durazo, and Marcia (Richard) Agnew; her grandchildren Bryan Murcko, Louie Anderholt, Marissa Murcko, James Anderholt and Diana Durazo along with three great grandchildren. She is also survived by her two siblings Larry Barker and Sara (Barker) Lewis.

Services to be held at a later date.

From my mother Muriel Gale Smith - So sad to hear of my dear friend Lola's passing. We had so much fun together when we were young children. We were friends from elementary through high school.
We had so much fun painting old shacks! We would speak Spanish as a special code between us. Mr. Francis was our wonderful Spanish teacher. She was a very dear friend and will be missed so much!!

Aunt Lola was so talented, and had a wonderful mind. She made a wedding doll for me that I still cherish to this day. To the immediate family, I am so sorry for your loss.
