Melbourne, Australia, Plane Crash Victims

A chartered airplane carrying five people in Australia crashed into a shopping center Tuesday morning, Feb. 21, 2017, shortly after taking off from Melbourne's Essendon International Airport. Four of the people aboard the small plane were U.S. citizens. Names of the victims were not released pending notification of next of kin. One of the victims, however, was identified in a Facebook post. Denelle Wicht said her brother Greg De Haven had been killed while flying to another location to play golf with two of his friends. "My handsome athletic big brother was killed today in a plane accident while on his 'once in a lifetime' trip to Australia," she wrote. "It was a charter flight with two of his friends flying to another island to play golf."

Don McNelly, an internationally renowned runner who completed 744 marathons, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017, according to the Richard H. Keenan Funeral Home in Fairport, New York. McNelly was 96. According to the funeral home's obituary, McNelly "completed 744 marathons, including all 50 states, all Canadian provinces, and 5 continents including Antarctica. He ran across Panama, completed a relay across the U.S., and ran up the Empire State Building. He holds the world’s record for most marathons of anyone over 80." The obituary noted that when McNelly wasn't running, "he found time to make wine, keep bees, author a book on mead, hunt mushrooms, crash a plane, and get numerous speeding tickets. His exploits were detailed in a published biography."

Hans Rosling, a Swedish medical doctor and statistician who made data come alive during worldwide presentations, died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017, in Uppsala, Sweden, according to multiple news sources. He was 68. He died about a year after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Born July 27, 1948, in Uppsala, Sweden, he studied statistics and medicine at Uppsala University in Sweden, and he studied public health in India. After receiving his medical degree, he tracked a rare disease in rural Africa and discovered its cure. In 1993, Rosling co-founded the Swedish branch of the international humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders, a nongovernmental entity that helps people in war-torn and developing countries.
