February 24, 2025

Fran was born in Pueblo, Colorado to Earl Venoy Welch and Lucile Sine Welch. She grew up in Suffolk, Virginia, alongside her much adored big brother James E. Welch, MD of Las Cruces, New Mexico.

She attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia and then on to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While enjoying life as a Pi Phi and a Tar Heel, she met her future husband Jon Hallock Tuthill of Glen Ridge, New Jersey. Shortly after graduating they set out for a new frontier, heading West to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1947. There, Fran's grandfather A.J. Sine employed Jon in his lumber business, Sine Lumber Company. She spent 76 wonderful years in her beloved Albuquerque, before moving to Montrose, Colorado to be closer to her children and grandchildren.

During her years in Albuquerque, Fran and Jon were active in Square Dance Circle, Duke City Promenaders, La Madera/Sandia Peak Ski Patrol, and The Tennis Club of Albuquerque. She was also a Girl Scout and Brownie leader as well as a den leader for the Cub Scouts.

She received two advanced degrees from The University of New Mexico and taught for the Albuquerque Public Schools as well as worked as the Administer of Guidance and Counseling for the South Area during the 70's and 80's.

Fran served on a number of community boards including The Tennis Club of Albuquerque and The Albuquerque Museum where she also volunteered as a docent. She was a longtime member of the Tuesday Literary Club and the Ya Ya's Book Club.

She leaves behind her son Jon H. Tuthill (Gail) of Durango, Colorado and their children, Jonathan, Megan Little (Cliff), and Caitlin (Ian O'Donnell). Her daughter Martha Scanlon (Tim) live in Montrose, Colorado, as well as Martha's daughter Heather Wofford (Travis). Great-grandchildren include Tee Wofford, Ryland Gregorio, and Evelyn O'Donnell.

Donations to the Albuquerque Museum or The Animal Humane Association will be appreciated.

Ms Tuthill was my teacher elementary school and even though I am 72 years old I still remember her fondly. I went on to earn a PhD and I was sad to hear of her passing. She was an awesome teacher and a friend to my mom who was also a teacher with APS.
