Dr. Stephen Breaud Obituary

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, July 22, 2023 at 1:00PM at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana for Dr. Stephen M. Breaud, 71, who passed away peacefully on Friday, July 14th, at his home in Baton Rouge. Reverend Cleo J. Milano will officiate. Visitation will be observed at the church beginning at noon. Dr. Breaud will be eulogized before the Mass by his dear friend, Mary Olive Pierson. Stephen is survived by his son Alec and daughter-in-law Olivia (Chudy) Breaud, of Pensacola, Florida and anxiously awaited the arrival of his first grandchild. He is also survived by his mother, Amy Hebert Breaud of Baton Rouge; his four siblings and their spouses, Suzette (Frank) Perry of McKinney, Texas; Alan (Shelley) Breaud of Lafayette; Melanie (Gary) Black of Lewisville, Texas; and Diane (Dale) Songy of Baton Rouge, as well as his family guardian angel, Sara Easterly. His father, P.M. Breaud, DDS predeceased him in 2016. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and raised in Baton Rouge, Stephen was a 1970 graduate of Broadmoor High School. After undergraduate studies at LSU in Baton Rouge, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity, he graduated from medical school at LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport. He completed his Residency at the Eye Foundation Hospital, University of Alabama in Birmingham School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology. He then performed his Fellowship in Vitreoretinal Disease and Surgery at Retina and Vitreous Associates of Alabama, University of Alabama in Birmingham School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Breaud was an extraordinarily skilled retinal surgeon, recognized by his peers as one of the best in the country. He devoted his life to his patients for decades, reluctantly retiring only months before his death. Above all, he was a beloved father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. With deep appreciation for their loyal and dedicated friendship, Stephen's family wishes to recognize and thank his longtime assistants, Julie Routh and Lauren Duplechin. Also gratefully acknowledged for being a constant in both Stephen and Alec's lives is Rachel Colar. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations in Stephen's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105, Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 445 Marquette Avenue, Baton Rouge, LA 70806, or the charitable organization of your choice.

I am so very sorry to read this. I worked for him 36 years ago and then worked with him in surgery at OLOL. He was without a doubt the best eye dr I have ever worked with. In fact, I was looking up his office # to get a recommendation. Each of you are in my prayers.

What a wonderful doctor he was, one of best retina eye surgeons in the south and probably one of top 5 in the country, he operated on my dad 36 yrs ago and he was so young then to be so talented in his work, and operated on me back in 2017 with my retina detachment, found out he had passed when I went for my check up yesterday.

Extending condolences to Dr. Stephen Breaud´s family, staff, patients, and friends. He has been my retina doctor for 33 years and an angel to me. I have diabetic retinopathy, and Dr. Breaud restored and preserved my vision with two major surgeries and numerous laser surgeries and check-ups through the years. I always totally trusted him and his expertise. Also, he did many kind things for me just because. Our loss of him has hit me hard. Wish I could have visited with him before God called him home. Stephen will always be in my heart. He was truly "special" and not just my doctor.

Heaven must've needed an eye surgeon. I had a bad injury several years ago. I had a detached, and torn retina, and Dr Steven Breaud brought the light back into the darkness, and made it to where I could see out my eye again. He was a good man, that helped a lot of people. Prayers to his family.

Our condolences to Dr Breaud´s family. We are truly sorry for your loss. Dr Breaud was always concerned about the results of his surgeries n his patients. He was my Dr n Surgeon for 25 years. He performed 4 major surgeries on my eyes n all were very successful. He and the Lord is the reason I can see today. I always liked his humor n each time I saw him, he would say, do you have another eye I can operate on? I replied, not at this time but I do keep your number handy! I will truly miss him.
Sincerely,
