Shirley Trahan Obituary

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at a 1:00 PM Mass of Christian Burial in St. Pius X Catholic Church for Shirley Ann Smith Trahan, 79, who died on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at her residence in Lafayette surrounded by her family. Interment will be in Lafayette Memorial Park. Reverend Steve C. LeBlanc, Pastor of St. Basil Catholic Church, will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Lectors will be Vernola Castille and Iva Clavelle. Giftbearers will be David and Sheila Plunkette. Survivors include her husband of fifty-seven years, Percy Paul "Blackie" Trahan of Lafayette; three sisters, Mildred Picard and Eva Manuel, both of Lafayette, and Vicky Myers of Mire; and one brother, Edward Smith, Jr. of Mire. She was preceded in death by her son, Lance Corporal Lex David Trahan; her parents, Edward Smith, Sr. and Alicia Leger Smith; and four brothers, J. B. Smith, Rodney Smith, Harold Smith and Patrick Smith. Shirley was born in Bristol, LA and a resident of Lafayette most of her life. She was formerly employed by L. A. Frey, Les Amis Florist, USL and St. Pius X Catholic Church. She was a member of the St. Pius X Ladies Altar Society and was a Eucharistic Minister. Shirley was named Woman of the Year by LBA in 1979. She was very involved with the Krewe of Oberon when her son Lex reigned as King. Pallbearers will be Edward Smith, Jr., Edward Smith, III, Perlis Trahan, Cody Whittington, David Prejean and Jared Trahan. The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille's DOWNTOWN location on Tuesday from 1:00 PM until 9:00 PM and will continue on Wednesday from 8:00 AM until time of services. A Rosary will be prayed by Vicky Myers and Vernola Castille at 7;00 PM in Martin & Castille Funeral Home. A heartfelt appreciation is extended by the Trahan family to Hospice of Acadiana. So sorry to hear of Shirley's passing. I knew Shirley from adoration @ St. Pius Church. Very sweet and kind person, always had a smile on her face! My condolences to her husband and family.
