Anthony Curro Obituary

Anchorage resident Anthony "Tony" J. Curro died unexpectedly Oct. 18, 2010, in Anchorage, surrounded by his family.

A visitation will be from 8:30a.m. to 9:45 a.m., with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m., Saturday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church. A reception will follow downstairs in the parish hall. Interment will be at 1 p.m. at the Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery, 535 E. Ninth Ave.

Tony was born Feb. 1, 1969, in Grand Forks, N.D., to Ann and James J. Curro. His dad was in the Air Force, so Tony traveled to many places including New York, Kansas, and Fairbanks. He moved to Anchorage in 1979.

Tony's passion was sports. He loved to play football, baseball, softball, bowling and volleyball as a kid and into adulthood.

Tony attended Wineteer Elementary in Kansas and Orion Elementary on Elmendorf AFB. He attended Central Junior High and graduated in 1987 from West Anchorage High School, where he was an All-State football player. He also played football at Southern Oregon State College.

In 1992, Tony married Leann Jack. In 1994, Tony became the proud father of Suzann Curro. Four years later, his son James was born. He and his wife later divorced. Tony's children meant everything to him. He loved to watch his daughter dance and play soccer, and his son play football and soccer.

Tony loved working with kids, whether as a teacher at Pacific Northern Academy, as a coach, or with his kids, nieces and nephew.

Tony reunited with a high school girlfriend, Lorena Hernandez, who became his fiancee.

Tony is survived by his parents, Ann and James J. Curro; his children, Suzann and James Curro; his siblings, Beth Van Couwenberghe and husband Bill; his brother, James Curro and wife Sheri; his sister, Kristie Curro; his fiancee, Lorena Hernandez; nieces and nephew Annalena, Anthony and Annemarie Van Couwenberghe; his fiancee's daughter, Angelica Hess; and many extended family and friends.

Tony was preceded in death by his older brother, James J. Curro, Jr.

Condolences may be sent to P.O. Box 221152, Anchorage, AK 99522.

Tony- you will always live in my heart. The memories of the years with me and my children will never be forgotten. I know you are at peace now and hope that all those who love and miss you dearly find peace in that. You are missed by so many. I know the love you felt for your children..all the children's lives you touched and helped..that was your gift. -
I watch the flames of the fire dance
whispering memories of years past
a bird in the distance crys out
wings in the wind
freedom at last.
We will all be with you again in God's grace and time. Until then memories and the touch of your time with us will hold you close.

"Tony was always the toughest on our football team. He was our captain and the heart of our team. That's why we were always champs, because of his leadership. Most of all he was a champ to his kids." Miss you Tony. Stephen Malone

My deepest sympathy to all the Curro Family. I remember well the dedication and caring "Mr. Tony" showed to his students and PNA. Sometimes in my mind's eye, when I walk into the PNA gym, I see Tony coaching, organizing tournaments, encouraging young people to do his or her best. We will miss you, Tony. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your loved ones!

Tony saved my life. He protected me from a bad situation time and time again and I can't even begin to explain my gratitude for his friendship. God bless you.
And to his family, my prayers are with you now. He will be missed.

My deepest condolences to the Curro family. This is a great loss to all who knew Tony and especially those who worked along side him or were one of the hundreds of young people he impacted. The two years I taught at PNA, Tony and I were of like mind and spirit. I respected his commitment and talent in his field and marveled at how hard he worked.
Memory Eternal!

Tony, you touched many lives, were loved by many, and will be truly missed by all who knew you. Thank you for being my friend and for being a part of my life and my best friend “Lorena Hernandez” life as well. Thank you so much for showing her what love is again, for loving her unconditionally, and for teaching me that when it’s meant to be it will be.

Until we meet again my dear friend may you be in peace and be our guardian angel watching over us all until it’s time for our paths to cross again.
