Arthur Fried Obituary

Anchorage resident Arthur Fried, 80, died Feb. 26, 2009, at Providence Extended Care.
A private service is planned.
Arthur was born July 15, 1928, in the Bronx, N.Y., to Samuel and Lillian (Berman) Fried.
He graduated from the Bronx High School of Science in 1945. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brooklyn College in 1950.
He married Lillian Beckhardt on Jan. 15, 1951.
Arthur and Lillian arrived in Anchorage in 1953. They lived in Turnagain until their house was destroyed in the 1964 earthquake. They then bought a house in College Village that same year and lived there until 1994, when they moved to Chester Park Senior Co-op.
Arthur worked as a budget analyst for the federal government for 20 years and as a wage and hour investigator for the State of Alaska until his retirement in 1983.
Arthur loved music and playing cards with his friends at Chester Park. He was a huge college basketball fan. He also had been a member of the Dog Obedience and Training Club of Anchorage.
He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and had dinner at the home of his son, Steve, every Sunday.
Arthur had a great sense of humor and was incredibly intelligent, his family said. He was a great father and grandfather and a wonderful friend to all who knew him. He will be sorely missed.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Terry Fried of Anchorage; his grandchildren, Elena Fried of Anchorage and Susie Fried of Seattle; his daughter, Susan Fried of Seattle; and his sister, Irma Rosenblatt of Maryland.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian.

You don't know me, but Arthur and Lillian were frequent patrons of my business, Scan Home, back in the 80's. They were such a cute couple when shopping for furniture. Arthur was very analytical and logical I recall. Lillian gave her opinion and then deferred to Arthur's lead. I seem to recall making an after hours delivery or two myself to their College Village home to meet their schedule. One was a sleeper that just didn't want to fit. We shared quite a laugh (and some sweat) over that one. What a terrific couple they were!

Dear Susan,
I was sad to hear about your dad. I doubt we're ever prepared for our parents passing no matter how old we are.
As Lisa said, we sure have some good memories from your house in high school. My memory of the night we watched "Hair" with your mom and dad is still vivid. What a blast. That's when I realized where you got your sense of humor from.

Steve.
I worked several years with your Dad at Wage & Hour and still remember him reading one of his favorite magazines, The Saturday Review during his lunch breaks. He was one of the most respected employees, not only for his intelligence but for his kindness to the clients as well as co-workers. My condolences to you and your family.

Elena,
I wanted to say that I'm keeping your family in my thoughts; a death of a loved one hurts like hell. You were my rock when things went bad; I will be your rock through this.

Susan and Steve,
Keeping you close in my heart and thoughts after learning of your dad's death. This can be such a sad and difficult time and I hope it helps even a bit to know that others care and are thinking of you all. Your home and parents are such a big part of our circle's high school years--I know that they are remembered fondly by all of us. Wishing you moments of comfort and peace...Lisa

Dear Susan, we wanted you to know our thoughts are with you. Your dad was indeed as terrific man, and one of the reasons, we're sure, that you are such a special person. We still look back to the days when you and Peekie were in school, and smile at some of the stories we only learned much later. We hope you've continued using your photography talent into the digital age. Our best to you, Connie and Stu Godwin

To Art's family, my thoughts are with you at this time. Although I am much younger, as a Bronx HS of graduate, I felt a kinship with Art and enjoyed talking with him a great deal. All my best to the family
