Bree Hays Obituary

Chugiak resident Bree Malinda Hays, 36, passed away after a battle with breast cancer at her home in Chugiak, Alaska on June 2, 2013.

A service will be held at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Eagle River on Friday, June 7, 2013 at 3 p.m. with Father Tom, Father Anthony and Father Augustin as the officiants. An additional service will be held in Waterloo, IA at a later date. She will be laid to rest at Angelus Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers include Steve, Simon, Rob, and Adam Hays, Casey Flint and Ryan Garner.

Bree was born in Waterloo, Iowa on August 7, 1976. She received a BSN in nursing at the University of Alaska Anchorage. She lived in Anchorage from 1992-2005 where she worked as a school nurse at Ursa Minor Elementary School and from 2005-2011 she lived in Petersburg, Alaska where she worked as an administrator at Mountain View Manor and a nursing administrator at Petersburg Medical Center. Bree loved spending time with her family, Zac and her boys Angus and Lachlan, and enjoyed reading, gardening and photography.

Her family wrote, "Bree has always defied the odds and overcome the many obstacles in her life with a grace that is and will always be admired. Her beautiful presence will always be felt through her two children that she and Zac fought so hard to have and to raise. Her family is the one accomplishment in her life that Bree was most proud of. She will be remembered for her courage in the most difficult times and her grace in overcoming all obstacles as a mother, wife, daughter and sister or friend who influenced and touched many in her life."

Survivors include her sons Angus Michael Hays and Lachlan Henry Hays; husband Zachary Hays (Zac); father Reed Ericson; mother Laurene L. Ericson; sister Shauna (Sarper) Ericson-Kadiogla; uncles Tom (Kami) Lanigan and Lanny (Peggy) Lanigan; aunts Barb Lehman and Linda Silva; brothers-in-law Steve (Diana) Hays, and Adam (Kim) Hays; sister-in-law Therese and Wes Hartlieb; mother and father-in-law Pam and Dave Brennen; father and mother-in-law Rob and Ann Hays.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents Clarence Mary Lanigan, Edge and Helen Ericson; uncle Jim Lanigan; cousin Tyler Pearce; and grandparents-in-law Marie and Henry Kirchner.
