It is impossible to soothe the pain over the loss of someone who you love and admire. But after grieving, there is joy in memories. Thinking of Bryon Birdsall can only make me smile. He was the best of men: kind, understanding and he had the ability of creating the artwork I tried to describe in my letters and over the phone. The years go by and I can hardly remember when it was... Our little St. Patrick's Church in Barrow, Alaska was new and lovely but it lacked the beautiful stained glass windows. I had collected some of Mr. Birdsall's landscapes and his "Four Saints of Alaska" so the Parish Council was enthusiastic when I approached them about 14 large framed paintings of the Stations of the Cross. It was a big commitment for our small congregation, but everyone was enthusiastic. And Mr. Birdsall was wonderful!!
14 Framed Paintings! No problem!
Contract? No problem! "I've don't need a contract!" As long as you want them, I'll paint them!
Payment? No problem!!
He would take a year to paint them. Then he would frame them and ship them to Barrow. We raised funds throughout the year. How marvelous! Every family joined together to donate for the station of their choice. Someone offhandedly commented, "Who would want to donate the station, "Christ Stripped of His Garments?" My daughter and I jumped up and exclaimed, "We will!!" When the paintings arrived in Barrow, Fr. Gallagher was present (the Diocese sends a priest once a month). He was so excited when he called the diocese to arrange the blessing of the paintings on the Feast of the Archangels. These paintings were the culmination of gentle persuasion and enthusiastic parishioner response. When the Stations were hung in the Church, we had a big celebratory dinner and invited the town to see our "gallery" of religious paintings.
Ever after, whenever I went into St. Patrick's, I would look at the beautiful stations and ask God to bless Byron Birdsall.
Several years later, when I was in town, I met him at one of his showings. He was everything I knew he would be: kind, smiling, brimming with good will. Doing what one loves brings the goodness out in people.
When I moved to Anchorage three years ago and saw Byron's whimsical paintings of "Denali as seen from ....., Japan! at Artique's Gallery, I bought as many originals of these as I could!
Byron, you are sooo very clever!!
I hope you are happy where you are and you can paint to your heart's content!!

Byron was a delightful gentleman and equally delightful artist. I was so pleased to see so many of his works at the Alliance Cancer Care Center in Seattle where my mother was recovering from leukemia treatments. They provided solace and reminders of home. We will miss him greatly, and are truly sorry that we will not be able to attend the memorial service for this lovely man.

I purchased one of his first prints of our theater here in anchorage and it has survived the many earthquakes that make it hang crooked. It hanged very wierd the day of his passing. What a talent this man had.

Billie and family, Byrons Dad and my Dad Charles Kingsley were college roommates. They had a long loving relationship. Byron and myself were often together growing up and I have the deepest respect for him and his talent. We have several pictures passed down to us in the passing of my folks that we cherish. Our prayers are with all of you in the passing of a great man. Sure our parents have welcomed him to his heavenly home.

Your father was a great artist who will be missed by many. In his memory, we worked on a jigsaw puzzle over the New Year's weekend at our cabin of one of his winter scenes with the moon shining on a river. I was also pleased to receive his Anchorage centennial print as a Christmas gift, one of many of his great works of art I have. May he continue to create in his new celestial home.

What a loss! I never had the opportunity to meet Byron, but I loved his work! I lived in Anchorage from 1972 until I remarried on New Years Eve 2004 and moved back to Pennsylvania. Byron did the only watercolors that I ever liked. I work in oils, which I love. His work was always so great and could be identified w/o looking at the signature. God bless all of his family and close friends!
