Dolly Jacko Obituary

Dolly Foss Jacko, 88, longtime resident of Pedro Bay, and one of the last remaining elders born in Old Iliamna Village, died peacefully March 24, 2011.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, and on Sunday in Pedro Bay.

Dolly was born Aug. 14, 1922, to Sophie Rickteroff Foss and Samuel Baard Foss and moved to Pedro Bay with her family in 1926. She spent most of her life in the small Iliamna Lake village.

A generous person, Dolly helped raise numerous children besides her own nine. She loved to laugh and be in her home and was known for keeping a house full of plants and a garden bursting with flowers.

The subsistence way of life was an important part of her life. She enjoyed berry picking and ice fishing and regularly out-did others with her birch fishing pole.

Although a mild person, each July Dolly assumed the role of general, overseeing her troops while the family put up fish. Many considered her smoked fish the best on the lake.

Dolly was an excellent needle worker and spent hours each day embroidering tablecloths and pillow cases. She made many beautiful afghans and her grandchildren treasure the patchwork quilts she made for them.

Dolly was preceded in death by her brothers, Johnny and Benny; sister, Hazel; sons, Earl and Johnny; and daughter, Susan.

Survivors include sisters Marjorie Jensen of Pedro Bay and Edna Shugak of Anchorage; brother, Johnny Foss of Montana; sons, Norman of Arkansas (wife Lisa), George Jr. of Anchorage and Michael (wife Esther) of Pedro Bay; daughters, Barbara Atwater (husband Steve) of Soldotna, Sherlie Taylor (husband Paul) of Pedro Bay, Sophia Chris Osolnik (husband Mike) of Arizona; grandchildren Josh Jacko, Jamie Jacko, Kahana Jacko, Joel Jacko, Sean Paul Taylor, Jermaine Sue DeLashmit, Mychal Whispell, Zachary Jacko, Courtney Osolnik, Cara Osolnik, Mikah Osolnik, Heather Jacko, Troy Jacko, Ashley Jacko, Riley Jacko, Holden Jacko, Ethan Atwater, Savannah Anelon, and Torina Talley; 11 great-grandchildren and former husband, George Jacko.

"Dolly, a believer, has gone to be with her Lord and savior Jesus Christ," her family wrote.
