Long time resident Gloria Lily Cornell Guillen fell asleep in death on Oct. 4, 2018, at Providence Alaska Medical Center. She was 88 years young.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018, at 2 p.m., at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 2301 Strawberry Road in Anchorage, Alaska.
Gloria is survived by brothers, Sam (Josie) and Robert (Marsha); her aunt, Helen and cousins; son, Richard (Kelly); grandchildren, Revin, Candice, Tovah and Wes; great-grandchildren, Colton, Samus and Keilah; daughter, Eileen; grandchildren, Kalen, Garen and Nathan; great-grandson, Jaydon; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and many others Gloria loved as her own.
She was born on June 13, 1930, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Tom and Flora Cornell. She married Joe Guillen on July 30, 1955, celebrating 53 wedding anniversaries. Mom missed Dad every day after his death in 2008.
Gloria worked as a medical transcriber helping with finances while Joe attended LA Trade Tech to become an electrician. In 1976, they moved to Anchorage and later helped establish the first Spanish-speaking congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Gloria loved teaching scriptural truths that improved lives, loved music and playing piano at congregation meetings and in large orchestras, when live music was played at assemblies and conventions. She was widely known for her generosity and hospitality. When other mom's came to school in robes and curlers, our Mom never embarrassed us in this way, her appearance making us proud.
Matthew 22:32 states Jehovah is not "God of the dead but of the living." Gloria trusted that while asleep in death she would be "alive" in Jehovah's memory awaiting the promised resurrection to an earthly paradise soon to come.
To the wonderful nurses of the Providence PCU who administered loving care to "Miss Gloria," thank you.

I can not believe it's been a year without my Mom. So many
Times I thought I should tell Mom this or that then I remember I have to store that to tell her when I see her in the New System. I lost her baby brother too 6 months after
Her, so I have a lot to look forward to, when ALL of my family members sit at a table ALL together again! We will all be perfect, all praising Jehovah God, once again in unity serving our Creator Jehovah. I truly miss her!

It has been 20 days and appx. 480 hrs without my mom at my side. At times it seems like yesterday than again it seems like years since she was here with us at home. I'm so grateful to my sons that they have her answering family questions taped from several years ago to capturing her infectious laugh just days before she passed away. I feel like such a orphan without both of my parents but then I have the best Father of them all. Jehovah, my God and Father to lean on. I will be with my parents shortly in a earthly paradise, until then, the Bible, my memories and support from family and Cong. Will help me daily. Then I will be eternally with them both

Grandmother Glorias example and faithfulness has been so encouraging to us. Wes and I went on a sunset walk tonight and talked about how we love that she was so close to Jehovah her whole life and up to the end. She always woke up every morning and read her daily text, then watched something spiritual on JW tv. She is a wonderful example we strive to follow. Im so proud to call Joe and Gloria my grandparents. We are excited to greet them in paradise.

This was Mom...whenever I forgot something for school like lunch when Mom opened the door and walked into my classroom everyone's eyes widened mouths dropped open and asked who is that?!?! She always gave attention to how she looked even if she came to school for a mere moment. Over the years I came to appreciate that her beauty was more than superficial. It ran deep. The inner person was far more beautiful. Mom was always kind and extremely generous, qualities I try to reflect everyday. Thanks for being a great mom and teaching us about the one you always tried to honor, glorify, and reflect...our great god Jehovah

I spent the first 7 years of my life with my beloved and favorite grandma. One memory I remember about her? Too numerous. Let me share some of the most memorable: I remember her always singing while she did chores, loved to hear her beautiful voice. The way she sat at the table sipping her coffee in her robe. The $50 gift to spend at Toys R Us. A highlight! To this day I still remember her wise words to me. My fave "if you need to cry, just cry." She always knew what i needed. Hurts that shes temporarily gone to sleep, but the thought of seeing her soon as a spring chicken is beautiful indeed!

I had my Mom everyday. I never expected a day without her. Her faithful service has finished. It is now up to me to follow the examples of both my Mom and Dad. Reading and meditation on the words of our Creator, Jehovah. Belief in Jesus that he died so that we might live forever on earth in a paradise like condition. Sleep well Mom, until you hear Jesus' voice to Wake up and come back to us
along with my resurrected Dad and other family members. I will miss her infectious laugh, miss her warmth and miss her loving me.
