Jason Mouw Obituary

Jason passed away peacefully on Aug. 25, 2018, three days before his 45th birthday, surrounded by his wife, parents and sister.
Jason was born on Aug. 28, 1973, in Colfax, Wash., the son of Bruce and Cathy Mouw. The family moved when Jason was three years old and spent seven years in Sultan, Wash., where Jason took part in outdoor activities with his family. At age 11, the family moved to Stanwood, Wash., where Jason graduated from high school. As a teenager, Jason was an active member of his church, a key player on his high school football team, a record setter in the weight room, a talented trumpet player and an active hunter and outdoorsman with his father and uncles. Jason was known for his great physical strength, his fun-loving sense of humor, his soft-spoken nature and his kind heart.
After high school, Jason moved to Orange City, Iowa, and attended Northwestern College. Jason's college friends and family remember Jason with a mischievous smirk, orchestrating harmless fun. Jason played college football and traveled to Russia with the college orchestra. Jason moved to Alaska, where he received his master's degree from APU and then to Missoula, Mont., where he received his doctorate degree in forestry.
Jason and his wife Heather Mouw returned to Anchorage, where Jason worked as a wildlife biologist for Fish and Game, where Jason and Heather's two boys, Jacob and Wyatt, were born and where Jason became an advocate for the protection of Alaskan waters and an active and vital member of his church, ChangePoint. Jason loved Jesus and his family is thankful for the knowledge that he is now with the Father.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, Aug. 31, 2018, at 4:30 p.m. at ChangePoint Church, 6689 Changepoint Drive in Anchorage. In lieu of flowers, please give at any Well's Fargo Bank to the Mouw Family Memorial Fund to help with significant medical costs and college fund for Jason's sons.

Dear Mouw Family,
Jason was a dear friend, a great OhD student and wonderful colleague. He will be greatly missed and I wish you all the best in his absence. I was privileged to work with Jason on his dissertation research and on our Salmonid Rivers Observatory Network project. He was a key scientist in this very successful project. His papers are widely recognized as thoughtful and well documented studies. I will always value the time I had with Jason in the field and in the lab. He was honorable, fun and thorough and man did he know his plants. I have one anecdote about camping in the bush with Jason. It was on the Kwethluk River out of Bethel Alaska near our SaRON camp where we were working on geomorphic controls on chum spawning. We were in our tents when a bear went off big time roaring and tearing up vegetation apparently because we were camped on the gravel bar where he/she wanted to fish. I said to Jason "that sounds bad" and he said "yeah but I have my big pistol ready." Ten minutes later the bear continued to make a fuss but the loudest thing I heard was Jason snoring like hell but obviously peaceful. The bear went away shortly thereafter. So, we had fun, did good work and enjoyed each others company. I will miss him immensely as I know you already do. Best wishes and please contact me when you can as I have some photos of Jason you may enjoy. So sorry to have him go. [email protected]

I did not know him well in school, but everything I remember of him was good -- high energy, an infectious smile, a young man of kindness and talent. He was far too young to die. It is not fair and I can only imagine the anguish his loved ones must feel. We don't know the number of our days or why. We can only put our hope in the resurrection to come and learn to carry our memories with more sweetness than pain. I am so sorry for your terrible loss.

I am so sorry for the families loss. I knew Jason from the rooms. He was a remarkable gentleman. Sincerest Condolences.

August 29, 2018

I didn't know Jason, but I did know his father, Bruce. Mr. Mouw was my High School teacher. He still is at the top of the list as favorite teacher of all time. I know how much Mr. Mouw dearly loves his wife and children, because he talked about them all the time in class. I am so sorry for this loss, and send my love and prayers to you all. It seems Jason followed right along the path of his father as being a fun loving, humorous and wonderful person.

Deepest condolences to the Mouw family. On my two visits to Alaska with my brother in law, Jason was so welcoming and despite his busy schedule went out of his way to show his guests an adventurous time in Alaska. Almost immediately he made virtual strangers to him feel like they were lifelong friends. I feel lucky that I will always have fond memories of my time with Jason as our tour guide in the Alaska wilderness.
