George Fischer

1931 - 2014

George Fischer, 82, passed away on Friday, March 21, 2014, in Alamogordo. He was born on Sept. 29, 1931, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Fred and Marie Jost Fischer.
George grew up and attended school in Cleveland. He entered the U.S. Army in 1952 and served two years at White Sands Proving Ground near Alamogordo as a Radar Repair Technician. While stationed there, he met and married Nancy Lou Todd. After completing his Army service, he returned to Cleveland with his wife and resumed his job as a truck driver.
A few years later he took a job with NACA, the predecessor to NASA, and entered an apprenticeship as an instrument mechanic. In 1959, he was offered a job with a civilian contractor responsible for maintaining computer equipment at Holloman Air Force Base, and moved his family back to Alamogordo.
In 1968, he and his wife bought and operated the Enco Service Station on Indian Wells Road. Several years later, they built Fischer's Auto Service on Arizona Avenue and operated that business until selling it and retiring in 1992.
He is survived by his daughter Ganne Crimmins Allen and her husband, Mike, of Alamogordo; son Russell Fischer and his wife, Marty, of Monticello, Ill., granddaughters, Taryn O'Dell and her husband, Grant, of Carbondale, Ill., and Calli Fischer, of Monticello; cousin Ellie Hrabak, of Cleveland and his significant other and close companion, Beverly Haschak, of Alamogordo.
Fischer was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Nancy Fischer.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Monte Vista Cemetery.
