Richard Kenneth Noty

Richard Noty Obituary

Richard Kenneth Noty, 48, family formerly of Roland, passed away Thursday, Feb. 22, after a short but fierce battle with lymphoma. He was a research analyst for the city of Chicago Department of Health, lacrosse player and Australian Rules football player.

Richard was a former lacrosse coach at Lane Tech for two years. He loved all sports but found a true home with the Chicago Footy team and was a constant member and supporter. He had humor, passion, enthusiasm and commitment for those he valued. He loved all music, played guitar and was a rabid Dr. Who and Monty Python fan.

He leaves to mourn his father, Dr. Charles Noty; one sister, Elisabeth Noty; one brother, Chuck Noty; his life partner, Jane Berry; and a host of family, friends, teammates and co-workers.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Wilma Osheim Noty.

He will be missed by all for his love and support - he always could be depended on to help his friends, family, life partner and teammates.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lymphoma Research Foundation.

Well, you would have been 60 today... I still miss you and love you. We had our celebration of your life last night, and are grateful for the time we each had with you.

Friend of mine
Has gone away
Like a light from yesterday
Lost in space
Somewhere they say
This friend of mine

He could sing
Like a child
A mother's dream
So sweet and mild
Or big and mean
Loud and wild
This friend of mine

His voice is still
Like the night
Rustling winds
Of angel's flight
Take him home
To the light
This friend of mine

This friend of mine

And of course, his soul is carried always in the hearts of those of us who love him.

What can you say about someone who quotes from one of his favorite Sci-Fi movies when he is told he is going to die within the week? Toasty was one of a kind, "There can be only one"... His love of music, sports, animals and his family and friends and his sense of humor is definitely missed. We all keep him in our hearts. He lived a good life, and was well-loved. What more can you ask?

To sum up: "Every man dies, not every man really lives" Rich was one of those who really lived...

My fondest memory of Coach Noty was when one day during lacrosse practice, instead of doing the usual drills he changed everything up and let us play aussie rules football. It was awesome, thats just one of those great moments many us at Lane Lacrosse owe to this wonderful man.

I met Coach Noty during my freshman year and he was a character. Being an offensive player, there wasn't as strong a bond as he had with his defenders but his presence was unmistakable. He always seemed to bring a certain cheer to practice or a game. Even after his coaching days were done, it was always wonderful to see him on the sidelines at a game. My prayer's go out.

Coach Noty was a great man; one who was willing to give so much to a group of kids he just met in a program that was below the radar in most every respect. I have only fond memories of Coach Noty, so full of spirit and energy. My condolences to all who know and love him.

I only had the chance to meet Coach Noty a handful times at practice my freshman year. But I will always remember the fire he brought to every practice he could make it to and of course kicking around the football after.

My thoughts and prayers are with Rich and all of his loved ones in their time of grief. I knew Rich through my friendship with his life partner, Jane Berry. Jane and Rich had a close, loving and fun relationship that made being with them a joy. I'll miss the repartee between them, his sense of humor and his caring nature. May our memories bring us comfort.

I was dumbfounded when I heard that Coach Noty had passed away. He was an excellent Coach and had a great personality. Practices were always something to look forward to. Had he not worked as hard as he did to save our program, I would not be where I am today. Thank you Coach Noty. I am deeply indebted to you.

Coach stuck with our team at Lane even when it's future seemed bleak. This is but one example of Rich Noty's great character. He was always there for you, with a smile and a laugh. Coach you will be greatly missed.

I was shocked to hear about Coach Noty's passing. Though through what he taught me, you must always keep your head up and smile through both the good times and the bad. You can't stay upset for to long while thinking of him. He was a great man and a great coach. He will be greatly missed.

Dr. Noty, Elisabeth, and Chuck, I offer my condolences on Richard's death. I remember when he was born as I was Wilma's student at American Conservatory then. She was so proud of her "new" son. Evidently Richard had a full life and was well thought of by his peers and players from Lane Tech. I met him only once after he was grown. I offer my sympathy.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Coach Noty's passing. I'll always remember his great smile, booming voice, hilarious jokes, and steadfast determination. He stuck by our team when no one else would. Thank you for all you did for us and our program. We love you Coach. God Bless.

I can not express what a warm and caring and adventurous man Rich Noty was. As a coach, he preserved the lacrosse program at Lane with his passion and dedication. He and the players forged a wonderful relationship. He brought me into that family and I will be forever grateful.

It’s been more than 25 years but I can easily picture Rich in the alcove of our dorm room, his beloved lacrosse stick propped against the wall alongside that goofy plastic horn he’d blow relentlessly to cheer on the miserable NU football team. A Robin Trower record is blasting on the stereo. He was a great roommate and friend, as kind and big-hearted as they come. We lost touch a few years after college, and I regret that. But it’s good to know that Rich pursued his passion for sports and music the rest of his way-to-short life.

I had the privilege of knowing Rich for the last 3 years - he was my downstairs neighbor and fellow animal fanatic. He had an oddball sense of humor that always cracked me up, and he was a very sweet, intelligent person. I'm sorry he's passed but wish his family and Jane, the best. He was very cool and I'm the better for having known him. You'll be missed, Rich.

Squab,

What can I say? I miss you already and yet I can hardly believe that you're gone. You always declared that you would live forever.

But then again, you will be evident on every sunny day. When I look up at the sun I will think of you, and sneeze. Thanks to you I am probably one of the few black women (if not the only one) in the entire world who knows ALL the words to "Behind Blue Eyes." My dog will be very happy to see you. Please pet him for me.

All levity aside, you have been a constant in my life since we were both just kids. I cannot imagine a world without you in it, so I won't. I will carry you always in my heart and my thoughts.

Roger Phillips

Richard,
Though we lost touch after college, I will always remember you with nothing but fondness. You were one of a kind and you will be sorely missed. My deepest sympathies go out to family and to those who were a part of Richard's life following Northwestern. Richard was a gem.
