Douglas Borton Obituary

Douglas C. Borton

AGE: 89 • Spring Lake

Douglas C. Borton, 89, passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2016, at his Spring Lake home. Born in Haledon, NJ, he was raised in East Rutherford, spending his summers in Ocean Grove. A World War II veteran of the US Navy, Doug graduated magna cum laude from Colby College in Waterville, ME. He went on to a successful career as an actuary specializing in the design and funding of large retirement programs, first at the Prudential Insurance Co. and then for 30 years at Buck Consultants, Inc., where he occupied various executive positions including the office of the president, chief actuary, and corporate secretary, as well as chairman of Buck (Canada) Ltd. Among his clients were the YMCA, the Boy Scouts of America, Citigroup, and the United Nations. His many professional honors included the Jarvis Farley Service Award for volunteer work and the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Conference of Consulting Actuaries.

After retiring in 1986, Doug continued to be remarkably active, serving as steering committee member of the American Pension Conference, director and chairman of the Actuarial Education and Research Fund, and chairman of the Board of Actuaries of the US Civil Service Retirement System, a role that often required him to testify before Congress. In all, he devoted 42 years to the civil service board, receiving upon his retirement a special commendation from the Office of Personnel Management. He wrote more than 100 book reviews for "The Actuarial Digest," was chief editor of "The Consulting Actuary," and served as a trustee of the Ranney School in Tinton Falls. He was a frequent speaker at actuarial conferences around the country.

Doug traveled widely throughout North and Central America and Europe. He led an active social life and could often be seen at the Spring Lake Golf Club, Spring Lake Bath and Tennis Club, and Belmar Fishing Club. Despite a series of illnesses in his final years, he remained cheerful and continued to enjoy life to the end. His courtesy, warmth, and kindness made him instantly likable, and even casual acquaintances spoke of him with affection and respect.

Doug was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Doris Ann Borton. He is survived by his fiancée, Patricia (Paddy Grall) Hamilton, and his son Douglas.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 from 4 to 7 PM at the Neary Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan, NJ 08736. A celebration of Doug's life will be held at the same location at 11 AM on Thursday, February 11, 2016.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made either to the Spring Lake First Aid and Emergency Squad, 309 Washington Ave., PO Box 94, Spring Lake, NJ 07762, or to the Spring Lake Community House, 300 Madison Ave., Spring Lake, NJ 07762.
