Harry Abramson Obituary

Dr. Harry Abramson

AGE: 97 • Somerville

Dr. Harry Abramson, 97, died quietly in his sleep, surrounded by his wife of 64 years, Libby and daughters, Dale (Cookie) Abramson of West Windsor, Vermont, Lisa Abramson-Conlon of Bridgewater and Amy Abramson-Denhoff of Wickford, Rhode Island. He was born in Montreal to Abraham and Clara, in 1915. The family moved to Newark when Harry was 7. He knew from an early age that he wanted to be a doctor, "to help people". Dr. Abramson attended Temple University, Loyola of the South and graduated from LSU and LSU Medical School in Baton Rouge. During WWII he served in the Army Medical Corp, as a Captain in the ETO.

Upon returning from the War, he took residencies at the Isolation Hospital in Bellville, NJ and Flower Fifth Ave. Hospital in NYC. Since he had seen more polio patients than anyone else in Somerset Co., he became the Polio Specialist in the area. In 1964 when polio vaccine became available, he served as Chairman of the program to immunize everyone in Somerset Co. against polio. He came to Somerville in 1948 as the first board-certified Pediatrician in Somerset or Hunterdon counties. In 1971, he became the first board-certified Allergist in Somerset County. He served as Chief of Pediatrics at Somerset Hospital for 17 years, bringing modern pediatric care to the county. He fought 8 years for parents' rights to stay with their hospitalized children 24/7. Dr. Abramson was always interested in aiding future nurses and doctors and established an education fund through the Somerset Co. Medical Society to help needy nursing and medical students. He served on the Board of Health, Board of Education, President of Somerset Medical Assoc., founding member of Temple Shalom and founder of Somerset Pediatric Group. He was also a member of the Gardeners Club of Somerset Valley.

Besides his wife and daughters, he is survived by sons-in-law Kevin Conlon and Joseph Denhoff and grandchildren Erica Rose and Chase Denhoff and Alexander and James Conlon.

Funeral Services will be held at Temple Sholom, 594 N. Bridge, Bridgewater on 10am Wednesday. Interment will follow at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. Arrangements by Bruce C. Little did I know that my first doctor, after being handed over by Dr. Fritts, would be one of my best. What a kind and caring man with a smile I've never forgotten. I'm sure my family members who have predeceased me were also waiting to greet the good doctor. My sympathy to the family for their loss.

"Perhaps they are not stars, but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy." A thought that brings me comfort and I hope it brings you some peace as well.

We were saddened to read of Dr. Abramson's passing (our doctor) and would like you to know of our sympathy. He was a fine man and will be missed.
Words seem rather inadequate at a time like this, but perhaps knowing your friends are thinking of you will be a comfort.

I was one of Dr. Abramson's first patients when he first came to Somerville. He was a kind, gentle, and quiet man and when ever I needed cough medicine he made sure it was grape flavored just for me. Years later he treated my son and me for allergies. My deepest sympathy to the entire Abramson family.

Dear Libby, Lisa, and Family,

I know that my mom, Mary, was there to greet Doctor when he arrived. Doctor was kind, gentle and caring when he treated us and as he walked my mom (her hand cupped in his) through the mothering of her four children.
You are in our prayers and thoughts as you go through this most difficult of times.
Sincerely,
