Philip J. Dinkelberg, 83, passed away Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at Bayside Manor Assisted Living, Keansburg. He was a lifelong resident of Atlantic Highlands. He joined the Navy immediately after graduating from high school in 1943 and served on the USS Muliphen AKA-61. He received two battle stars for the assault and occupation of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He was a 60-year member of IBEW Local 400, Wall, retiring in 1988. During the Cold War in 1956 and 1957, he worked on the DEW Line (Distant Early Warning System) in Point Barrow, Alaska and missile sites in Thule, Greenland. He was also a past commodore of the Atlantic Highlands Yacht Club. He belonged to the Shore Chapter of the Navy League for many years and volunteered at NWS-Earle Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society for over 10 years.
Mr. Dinkelberg was predeceased by his wife, Jean Edwards, in 1996; his son, John, in 2001; and granddaughter, Brenna, in 1992. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Pete Smith of Brielle; his daughter, Susan Bajew of Katy, Texas; four grandchildren, Andrew Smith, Brian and Andrew Bajew, and Liza Bajew Lieber; a brother, Donald and his wife Leslie of Rhinebeck, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Penny Nonnemacher of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a brother-in-law, Raymond Edwards and his wife, Mary Ann of San Jose, Calif.
Relatives and friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 7 at Postens Funeral Home, 59 E. Lincoln Ave. at Central Avenue, Atlantic Highlands. There will be a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 8 at St. Agnes R.C. Church, Atlantic Highlands. Interment services are private.
