Bernice Schumer Obituary

Bernice Schumer passed away peacefully on May 18, 2014, at the age of 89. She was born with music and leadership in her soul to Solomon and Jennie Einspruch in San Francisco on June 19th, 1924. Growing up she was a concert pianist and continued playing throughout her college years at UC Berkeley.

She met her husband, Nathan Schumer, in Sacramento, California and they were married in San Francisco on March 9, 1947. Together they owned stores in Oakland, Sacramento, and Marysville. After being widowed at 38, she independently ran Marysville Plumbing on her own for 30 years.

She moved to the Yuba Sutter area in 1960. During that time she ran a business and helped lead the Jewish community in her area. She was well known in her community and was missed when she moved to San Diego in 2008 to be closer to her family.

Her children, Ira, Sol, and Marsha, grandchildren Nathan, Sara, and Lara, and great- grandchildren, Carter, Elliott, and Cameron, were her pride and joy.

She was preceded in death by her husband Nathan, brother Leon Einspruch, and grandson, Nathan Schumer.

Survivors include her daughter Marsha Shumer of Granada Hills, son Ira and his wife Ann Schumer of Murrieta and son Sol Schumer of San Diego, her granddaughter Sara Bell and husband Scott of Murrieta and Lara Shumer and husband Schecky Miluso of San Diego, and 3 great- grandchildren, Carter, Elliott and Cameron.

She will be remembered fondly by her family for always teaching us to do our best as well as to be kind and help others. Her friends and community will remember her as a person who donated her time and money to support the causes and people in her life.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to a cause Bernice cared for: Mosaic Law Congregation in Sacramento, and the Marysville Congregation of Beth Shalom. Graveside services will take place at Home of Peace Jewish Cemetery at 6200 Stockton Blvd in Sacramento at 2 p.m. on May 21, 2014.

I'm so saddened to hear of the death of Bernice. She was truly a great woman. I was introduced to her by Reg Streeter owner of KOBO radio in Yuba City. I ran the station with Reg in the late 80's. Bernice told me a quote that I will never forget. She said "you can't turn a pencil into a pen". That quote has stayed with me to this day. RIP Bernice.

Ira: So sorry to hear of the death of your mother. She was quite the lady! I talked to her many times at the shop on Lindhurst Ave. My father, uncle and grandfather dealt with you mom many, many over the years with their welding shop and rentals. They had a great deal of respect for her. You had a very nice mother.

You, she and all you family are in our prayers.
