Malcolm McAuley Obituary

December 3, 1937-
February 3, 2024
Our Dad, Malcolm "Mac" Joseph McAuley,
a resident of Danville, CA, came from a family of five; a mother, Grace who was a Mennonite, a father, Malcolm, a bit of a character, and 2 sisters, an older sister, Patricia and a younger sister, Pamela. They grew up in Marysville, CA, under trying times with not much money.

Our Dad had to work at an early age to make ends meet but managed a successful high school career coming out as a basketball star and graduating at the top of his class. After a short stint at the local junior college he got accepted into UC Berkeley where he got his business degree as a Phi Beta Kappa graduate and then went to UCLA and got his MBA.

After graduating, he joined the US Navy going through basic training and then to Naval Supply School in Athens near The University of Georgia, where he met our mother. After a blind double date and a whirlwind romance, they were hooked. Soon after he was sent to Vietnam as one of the first advisors prior to the start of the war. After a little over a year in Vietnam, he returned home, with a new black Peugeot and married our mother.

He taught economics and naval history for 3 years at the US Naval Academy with his claim to fame of teaching Roger Staubach (famed Dallas Cowboys quarterback). He then began a lifelong career of 34 years at Standard Oil of California (Chevron), holding various positions including being on the Board of Directors and later serving as the Chief Financial Officer of Caltex, a Chevron subsidiary. While serving as Assistant Treasurer, he was credited with raising the most money (14 Billion US Dollars) in the shortest amount of time in order to buy out Gulf Oil Company. At the time, it was the biggest corporate merger in US history.

After retirement, he served on the John Muir Hospital board of directors. He loved and adored our Mom and they recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Chevron afforded him the opportunity to travel the world with our Mom and sparked his love of travel that he continued throughout retirement.

Our Dad treasured family the most and loved spending time with his 4 grandchildren, Maya, Kailen, Nicholas, and Abigail, who he was so proud of. He had a love of ice cream, chocolate, and snacks, which never lasted long in the house. He was a collector of many things and especially loved vintage airplanes and going to the Reno Air Races. He loved a lot of things and we loved him. We were proud to call him Our Dad….We will miss him dearly.

A celebration of life is being planned for the spring.
