NELDA LOUISE SHURBET Nelda Louise Shurbet, 93-year-old Greenville, OK resident, passed away peacefully while surrounded by her family on Sunday, August 6, 2023, in the Lake Country Nursing Center in Marietta, OK. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 12, 2023, at the Eastside Baptist Church in Marietta with Ron Holt and Brett Alberda officiating. Following the service, Nelda will be laid to rest beside her husband in the Lakeview Cemetery in Marietta. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 11 in the chapel of the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home, Marietta. Nelda Louise Shurbet began this life on November 15, 1929, in Marietta, the fourth of eight children born to Walon and Clara (Kerrick) Holt. She grew up and attended schools in Greenville where she was active in 4-H and was a member of the basketball team. Her experience in 4-H was the starting point for her sewing talent. She also developed a talent for playing the piano and did so quite often as a young girl both at school and at church. Nelda graduated with the Greenville class of 1947. On November 7, 1947, Nelda married Eugene Joseph "Toots" Shurbet. They began married life on the Shurbet farm in Addington Bend. The two also lived in Shady Dale, OK, Bomar, OK, Shawnee, OK, Anadarko, OK, and north Texas before settling back in Greenville where they raised their boys. Nelda and Toots spent more than 48 years together before he passed away in 1996. Over the years, Nelda worked as a telephone operator in Marietta and as a "Floor Lady"/Supervisor at the Cookie Factory. She was an excellent seamstress and loved to write poetry. Nelda was a member of the Love County Historical Society and volunteered countless hours at the Pioneer Museum as a Docent and was also a member of the Ceramics Club. She also served as an inspector at the Greenville voting precinct for several years. When she wasn't working or volunteering, Nelda loved doing genealogy, crossword puzzles, quilting and doing needlework, and collecting antiques. She was also known to enjoy taking care of the cows with Toots, spending weekends with Darnell when he was helping around the place, or riding around with Larry Gene when he came to visit. Nelda also just loved to sit on the front porch and watch traffic go up and down Highway 77. Nelda was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband; by two sons, Larry Gene Shurbet and Darnell Shurbet; brothers, Walon Dare Holt, Eugene Holt, and Glendale Holt; and two sisters Mamie Pardue and Renea Johnson. Those left to cherish her memory are grandchildren, Eric Shurbet and wife Tiffany of Greenville, Shawnda Moody and husband Jeramiah of Lone Grove, OK, and Katy Scheiding and husband Wyatt of Dewey, IL; great-grandchildren, Jaden Arnold and wife Madeline of Ardmore, OK, Alli Arnold of Lone Grove, OK, Michael Shurbet of Greenville, John Scheiding of Dewey, Ethan Scheiding of Dewey, and Aden Scheiding of Dewey; a great-great-grandchild, Cecelia Arnold; daughters-in-law, Regina Shurbet of Lone Grove and Joan Shurbet of Thomasboro, IL; brother, Clinton Holt and wife Gale of Greenville, sister, Laquitta Ladner of Jimtown, OK; and sister-in-law, Gladys Holt of Stillwater, OK.
