Daniel McBrayer Obituary

McBRAYER, Daniel L. Daniel Lewis McBrayer passed away peacefully in his home on August 9, 2015 after a 2 1/2 year battle with kidney cancer. Wife of 54 years, Dianne Parker McBrayer went home to the Lord just 4 short months ago. He is survived by his son Daniel McBrayer II, daughter-in-law Caroline, and grandsons Daniel and Nicholas; his daughter Dana Conner, MD, son-in-law Bobby, granddaughters Abby and Shelby, and grandson Aaron; and his brother Jack McBrayer. Dan was born April 16, 1938 to Samuel Lewis McBrayer and Berta Holbrook McBrayer. He graduated from Bass High School in 1956. He attended Ga Tech and then became plant manager for Dart Corp. from 1966-1974. He later became a mechanical engineer for Precision Paint which later became Wattyl Paint. He was a long time member of Mt. Carmel Christian Church, McDonough Christian Church, and Daytona Christian Church. He was an awesome husband, father, and grandfather. He was a very humble man that many thought of as a gentle giant. His love for the Lord has been instilled in us all. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at Horis A. Ward Funeral Home- Fairview Chapel at 2:30pm. The interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 11, 2015, from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home. Dear Dan and Dana,

I knew your parents when I was just a kid, attending Mt. Carmel with my family. J.D. Smith was our youth minister back in those days, and in my eyes, your parents were the young couple all of us kids looked up to as our example of Christian love. All these years later, I still remembered them as soon as I saw your father's name. My thoughts are with you, and may you and your families find peace.

We are so sorry to hear about your father's passing Sunday. We are all heartened to think of the reunion as Gods children in heaven. May you sense God's velvet steel arms of compassion supporting you through these most difficult days. You have been and will be in our prayers.

I send love and comfort to the family. Danny was our best man, and he walked me to kindergarten. I loved him so very much, and will miss him. He was kind, gentle, fun, and loving.

The summer I graduated from high school Dan and I worked for the Atlanta YMCA at Camp Waco in Georgia.. Dan was a heavy sleeper, and his cabin was always the last to arrive for breakfast. He took a lot of ribbing for being late, but in his good natured way he would smile his sheepish smile, and give us his good natured laugh.

The young boys in his cabin followed him everywhere he went, he was so kind and gentle with them, teaching each new group that arrived at the camp for their two-week stay the ends and outs of Camp Waco.

In addition to his duties of making sure the boys participated in hiking, swimming and canoeing, Dan was responsible for teaching all of the boys about horseback riding. One afternoon I was standing talking to Dan when one of the horses ran wildly off with his young rider screaming for help. Without hesitation Dan through himself in front of the charging horse, with arms outstretched, yelling "Whoa Horse." The horse braked to a stop inches in front of Dan, who never flinched. He patted the horse, comforted the child, smiled at me, and said, "Guess we better send this one to the glue factory." From that moment on, for the rest of my life, when ever I saw Dan I always greeted him with, "Hey Cowboy." Since I was the Nature instructor, he always replied, "Hey Nature Boy."

Dan was the best man at my wedding, I couldn't have asked for a better friend or best man. He will be missed by many of us that have had the privilege of knowing him.
