MARSHALL, Nicholas Taylor Nick Marshall tragically passed away on February 5, 2018. During his short time with us, he profoundly touched many lives with his gentle kindness, work ethic, spirituality, and wit. Nick was born in Atlanta on February 15, 1999 to David and Gina Marshall; he is the younger brother of Alex Marshall, a second-year student at Georgia Tech. During his youth, Nick was a fixture at Buckhead Baseball and NYO where he played football, basketball, and baseball. Nick was a member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church. Nick graduated from The Lovett School with highest honors in the class of 2017. At Lovett, Nick excelled as a student and an athlete. He played on the Lovett baseball team, helping lead them to a state championship in 2016. He was known for his love of Spanish language and culture, tutoring fellow students who struggled with the language and volunteering to provide academic advising and mentoring to children from the local Hispanic community. Nick entered the University of Virginia in the fall of 2017. He began a path of high academic achievement, performing exceptionally well in the classroom. Outside the classroom, Nick was a rower on the Virginia Men's Rowing team. He displayed promising speed as a rower and was a significant contributor to the team's success. Nick was known for his entrepreneurial spirit, delivering firewood and starting a Christmas tree removal business with his brother, Alex. Nick enjoyed physical fitness, the outdoors, music, and hard work. Nick was known for his humility, sense of humor, and disarming smile. Nick was a wonderful son, brother, friend, and teammate, and brought joy to everyone who knew him. In addition to his parents and brother, Nick is survived by his grandparents, Jimmy and Fran Shuman; his aunts and uncles, Donna Peyton, Andrew and Sheila Marshall, Tommy and Betsy Marshall, and numerous cousins. In lieu of flowers, donations to honor Nick's life can be made to the Nick Marshall Memorial Fund benefiting Lovett Baseball or to the Nick Marshall Memorial Fund benefiting the Virginia Rowing Association. The memorial service will take place on Monday, February 12 at 2:00 pm at Peachtree Presbyterian Church with a reception to follow.

There is a poem by an unknown author that I wish to recite as I feel it aptly describes the feelings of Nick's Mom, Gina, Dad David & Brother Alex. The words are these: "You never said I'm leaving, you never said goodbye. You were gone before I knew it, And only God knew why; A million times I needed you, a million times I cried; If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. In life I loved you dearly, In death I love you still. In my heart you hold a place that no one could ever fill. It broke my heart to lose you, But you did not go alone, For part of me went with you the day God took you home". (end) I do think we can take comfort that Dear Nick IS, in fact HOME. Any friend or parent would be grateful to have such a fine, accomplished and handsome young man for a son--or an abiding friend. David, Gina and Alex: I am heartbroken over Nick. Although I had not seen him in a long time, Donna and Trevor always kept me current as to what both Alex and Nick were doing with their lives. Donna and Trevor thought the world of Nick, not to mention his grandparents.

Working closely with David for years at Hawkins & Parnell, I recall the many pictures of the boys all over the office, the joy in David's eyes talking about one of his sons' games or many accomplishments and the excitement in the boys' eyes when they occasionally visited dad at the office.
