He was born at Elk City Okla. After completing high school, he moved to Pampa Texas and worked in the oil industry.
In late 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving with the Seabees in the Aleutians and in the Battle of Okinawa. He was discharged from active service in October 1945. Their son Kent, was born in June 1943, he did not see him until he was discharged after World War II.
Immediately after his discharge, at the urging of his brother they moved to Salinas, Calif., where he worked in the produce industry until his retirement in 1980.
In 2004 he moved to Lincoln, Calif., to be near his son, Kent Summers, his daughter Sue Rogers, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their families.
He was a constant tinkerer, he could repair nearly anything. He enjoyed creating wonderful things out of supposed waste and scrap. He made wind chimes out of old pipe, clocks from scrap plexiglas, trivets out of leftover tiles and Christmas Trees from plywood, filament line, cotton and miniature figures and a string of lights.
He delighted in card games and was a master cribbage player.
He fought a war, then moved on. He built a house and a home, raised a family, sending both his children through college.
He was a strong believer, his worn and taped together Bible showed its daily use over a lifetime.
He had two children, Kent Summers of Carmichael Calif., who predeceased him, and Sue Rogers of Lincoln, Calif. He had four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Great Poppa was loved by all and will be missed by all that knew him.
He passed away peacefully on February 12, 2011, with his family at his bedside.
