Alan Bornstein Obituary

Alan Bornstein

Scottsdale - Alan Bornstein passed away on July 31, 2018 at the age of 53. He was born in Indianapolis on February 24, 1965 to Iris and Marvin Bornstein. He grew up in Plantation, Florida and attended Indiana University where he made long lasting friendships which he cherished and nurtured everyday. He received his medical training at the University of Florida and completed his residency at Loyola University in Chicago. In 1994, Alan and Liz met on a blind date and fell instantly in love - they were engaged three months later. The two were married on September 9, 1995 and following Alan's surgical oncology fellowship in Chicago, migrated west to Phoenix in 1997 where Alan joined a prominent surgical practice. Alan and Liz had a special relationship. It was true, unwavering love from the moment they met and it never diminished.

Alan was a beloved member of the medical community known throughout for his kindness, compassion, surgical abilities, and most importantly for his love of caring for his patients.

He dedicated his professional life to making sure that everyone was treated well and had good outcomes. Alan took care of everyone - he was the community's "personal physician" and always, always helped anyone, anywhere who reached out to him and needed his professional skills or advice. His colleagues loved him, his patients loved him, the community loved him.

Alan loved golf, music, traveling, hiking and - most importantly - spending time with his family. Nothing brought Alan more joy than spending time with his daughters, Talia and Kate. They were the sunshine in his life and he was so proud of all they had accomplished. We will miss him dearly - his smile, kindness, humility and friendship.

He is survived by his wife Liz; daughters Talia and Kate; parents Iris and Marvin Bornstein; sister Lori Veitch, brother Jay Bornstein; in-laws Lainie and Tom Weil; and brothers-in law Rob and Rick Weil. Donations can be made to Friends of the Israeli Defense Forces (FIDF.org) or Temple Chai of Phoenix (templechai.com).

Hello,

I couldn´t sleep tonight and wanted to reach out and let you know, Alan came across my mind. I went to grade school and high school with Alan. He was a great guy and always kind to me and others. He is one of many from our class at South we have lost way too early. I just wanted to let you know I was thinking of him. Best of luck in the future to you and your family.

Dear Bornstein family,
We just heard the sad news about Dr. Bournstein's passing. He was our son's surgeon this past year. He performed a pyloric exclusion on him. It was a very serious and difficult surgery. Dr. Bornstein told us that if our son hadn't been in such good shape and as young as he was (48) that he could have died. He was in the hospital recovering for 6 weeks. A couple of the doctors wanted to rush and release our son early, but Dr. Bornstein said that he was in charge and would release him when he thought it was time. We are so grateful and feel very fortunate that Dr. Bornstein was our son's surgeon. He was definitely a gifted surgeon and so caring and compassionate with our son and our whole family. We know you were proud of Dr. Bornstein and will miss him dearly, as will we all. We are so sorry for your loss.
Sincerely,
Maureen and Bill Veit

Dear Liz, Kate, Talia and extended family, We just learned about Dr. Bornstein's passing and send our deepest condolences. He was a true hero and someone my fiancé and I will always admire, appreciate and respect. He performed a very complicated, emergency surgery on my fiancé (who was 48 yrs old at the time), and, ultimately, saved his life with his superior talent as a surgeon. He was warm, compassionate, dedicated and caring of his patients. We are heartbroken to hear about your loss and want you to know what a heroic impact he made on us. With sympathy,
Jenni Maly & Steve Veit

We just received the incredibly sad news. We remember Alan as a truly kind soul. We remember very fondly having him for Shabbat dinner to our humble apartment when a chicken in medical school was a true luxury. Our thoughts are with his family, and we will remember him in our prayers this high holiday season.

My sincere sympathy to Alan's Family and friends. I was a classmate of Alan's at UF in medical school. He was a kind young man and a friend. We shared time during school, playing intramural sports, and saw a few reggae concerts in Gainesville with our group of friends. My memories of Alan and friends bring a smile to my face, though the message of his passing is painful. I hope God's grace will shine on his soul and the lives of his wife, children, family, and friends. RIP, Alan.

I was so shocked and saddened when I learned of Dr. B's passing. I still can't quite believe it. I worked with Dr. B for 16 years as a medical transcriptionist and had the privilege of being with him in the OR when he excised a skin cancer from my forearm. He was so gracious and patient to indulge my curiosity about the surgery, stopping to let me look and explaining all of the steps to me as he performed each one. I have a scar on my forearm which will always remind me of this kind, funny, compassionate man. My heart goes out to Liz and their daughters. May God comfort and provide peace and hope in the days, months, and years to come.

Dr. Bornstein was a caring doctor who gave my husband hope and confidence when other surgeons preferred not to treat him. Our family will be forever grateful for his kindness and support. We are saddened by the loss of such a wonderful young man who helped so many.

I want to express my deepest condolences to the family! Dr. Bornstein saved my life in 2011, when I was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer! He did my surgery to the best of his ability. That was 7 years ago! I never dreamed someone so young would die before me! I last saw him in February this year, and had no idea it would be the last! I am sorry to lose my doctor and friend! Sincerely, Helen Skie.

We came to first know Alan through our daugher's dive club. Alan always had a kind word and a smile. He was the favorite parent to be near at meets because he had a way of making everyone laugh. He was so proud of his daughters and so proud to be married to Liz. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Bornstein family.

Writing my thoughts is difficult to articulate but I wanted to contribute something here in the comments. Alan was a great guy and his passing was a tremendous loss. While I didnt know Alan as well as his colleagues or fraternity brothers, I certainly feel we had a connection on some level. We were neighbors who would say hello on a walk or exchange a quick text. Id see him at the store... we would pick up each others kids at school for a carpool. We would bump into each other at a birthday party or some other random time. He always had a smile and wed make smalltalk. The thoughts and prayers of our family go out to his friends, family and those who knew him best and will feel his loss.
