80, of Sun Lakes passed away on November 24, 2016. Betty defeated breast cancer by being a 45-year survivor and for over 10 years she celebrated with others in Phoenix's Race for the Cure. In spite of medical issues the past eight years, she remained so upbeat about life and she lived her life to the fullest! As she said in a 2007 article about her battle with breast cancer, "I am fortunate that I got to live my dream, raise my children and grandchildren. I play golf. I bowl. I'm living the American dream." And she played golf really well as evidenced by the four hole-in-ones she got in a 10 year period from age 60 to 70. Her bowling prowess is proven by her 169 average and the awards found throughout her house. Betty was happiest with a golf club in her hand and was a regular at the Sun Lakes Golf Course right up until just before her passing. Prior to retirement, she worked for Hughes Aircraft/Raytheon for over 20 years. She especially loved her dog, Lady who brought her so much joy in her last years. Betty was such a loving and generous woman. She is survived by her sons Rodney and Russell Covey, her daughter Patricia Fox, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, son-in-law John Christian and his family, and sister-in-law Debbie Gelvin and her family. She was preceded in death by her husband Al Desrochers, her brother Ray Gelvin, her youngest daughter Christine Christian, and her granddaughter Kasey Covey. Betty's Celebration of Life will be Saturday, January 7 at 2PM at Sun Lakes Country Club in the Navajo Room. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory with the American Cancer Society or Hospice of the Valley.
