Bonnie Campbell Obituary

Bonnie Maureen Campbell Bonnie Maureen Campbell, best known as Bonnie Owens, was born at home on October 1, 1929 in Blanchard, Oklahoma to Wallace and Davis Campbell the fourth of six girls and two boys. She passed away on April 24, 2006 in Bakersfield, California at the age of 76 from Alzheimer's. Bonnie was thought of and loved with high regard professionally and personally. She was a gifted songwriter and singer and a down-to-earth, warmhearted, happy and caring friend to everyone. She was Buck Owens first love and wife and a loving mother to her two sons, Buddy and Michael. She was also married to Merle Haggard and Fred McMillan. She was best known professionally as Merle Haggard's harmony duet partner. Bonnie sang any time she had the chance, from the time she was a little girl of seven standing on a bale of hay in their barn with a broomstick as a microphone. Her sharecropper parents moved their family to Arizona when she was twelve years old. At sweet sixteen she met a boy named Buck Owens at the local skating rink. Bonnie auditioned to be the girl singer in Buck's band and naturally their love of music became their common thread. They soon fell in love with each other and they married in 1948 in Mesa, Arizona. They became parents to two sons, Buddy and Michael, who Bonnie referred to as her "biggest and best accomplishment". Although Bonnie and Buck divorced they remained good friends throughout their years. Bonnie started her professional career as a singing cocktail waitress at the two best-known Bakersfield honky-tonks, the Clover Club and the Blackboard, where she worked tables and joined in on stage to sing with the band. At the time she was also the female vocalist on the "Cousin Herb Trading Post" which aired daily on television in Bakersfield. While Bonnie's manager and close friend Fuzzy Owen was working with her on her blossoming singing career, Fuzzy started promoting a young unknown singer named Merle Haggard. While Bonnie and Merle were working together their friendship grew to love and they married in 1965. Bonnie toured with Merle Haggard and The Strangers for more than thirty years as an integral element of the band doing what she loved the most. Bonnie and Merle divorced during that time but remained good friends through it all. Bonnie loved to sing, and she sang country music with pure joy. Best of all, she shared her own special Bonnie brand of joy on and off the stage with everyone; devoted fans, friends and family alike. When she finally retired from the road she moved back to her beloved Bakersfield, close to friends and family. Bonnie received many top industry awards during her singing career. She was the Academy of Country Music's "Top Female Vocalist" in 1965 and 1966 and "Top Duo" in 1967 with Merle Haggard. Bonnie also recorded several albums with Capitol Records as a solo artist and received numerous awards for her talent as a songwriter. Bonnie's father and mother, Wallace and Davis Campbell, brothers Charley and Delmer, and sisters Lucille and Jean preceded Bonnie in her death. In God's care Bonnie leaves behind to cherish her sweet loving memory, sisters Betty, Gail, and Loretta; son Buddy and wife Katy; son Michael and wife Kristin; six grandchildren Paul, Doug, Amy, Corbet, Jen and Brent; Doug's wife Brandy, Amy's husband Shawn and Jen's husband Scott; three great-grandchildren Macy, Jake and Hailee; friends Phyllis and Fuzzy Owen; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Her heart sang but it was her spirit and eyes that danced. It was in those soft warm eyes that we saw and felt only light and love. She cared for everyone. Her loving soul is a perfect rest now, renewed and restored. Bonnie is no doubt the lead angel singing harmony for all of heaven. "Mama, God is for you, Jesus is with you, the Holy Spirit is in you, and all of heaven's angels are by your side. And Mama, "we love you more". A public memorial service for Bonnie will be held today, April 27, 2006 at 11:00 am at Greenlawn Mortuary Southwest at 2739 Panama Lane in Bakersfield at the Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Bonnie's loving memory to Hoffman Hospice, 5300 California Avenue, Suite 1, Bakersfield, CA 93309.

I'm deeply saddened by the loss of Bonnie Owens. She was an indispensable part of Merle Haggard's music, and I love Hag's music more than anything. It wouldn't have been the same without her backup and harmony vocals. Her influence on Hag's songwriting was also invaluable. It's the loss of a great talent and a great person.

I extend my condolences to the entire family.

As a young girl growing up in Bakersfield, I remember Bonnie well. She rented an apartment from my family on Center Street, right behind our house in Bakersfield. Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Fuzzy Owen and several others local country singers and band members would

hang out at her place. My family and I would listen to Bonnie sing on the ‘Cousin Herb Henson Trading Post Show’ (and even visited on the set at the television station). I use to visit with Bonnie while she waited for her ride (at the end of our driveway) to go to work and when cared for a litter of puppies that she kept in the bathtub (in her apartment). My mother (Shirley Kyles) and Bonnie got along really well because they both sang and loved music. I shall always remember Bonnie as smiling, very friendly and exceptionally caring.

I never have and never will meet a more dignigied individual than Bonnie. More than the singer, the star, the celebrity, it was the person which most impressed me. She made the lives of those she touched better. May God bless and keep you.

To Bonnie, my second mom,
I hope you had some small idea of how much your love meant to me throughout the years. Your guidance and support were second to none. No one else I have ever met was loved so much by every single person who ever met them, and no one ever went so far to make every person feel like a special friend. I miss you. The world misses you.

To my dear friend Bonnie and her family. I was so honoured to have Bonnie as a friend, I count myself so lucky. Since I had the chance to go on some tours with Merle, I was lucky enough to have an amazing friend in Bonnie. The best words to describe Bonnie, are Sweet Sweet Lady. She helped me through some tough times, dealing with my dad's death, she made sure I always had food and a place to stay. Bonnie told me story after story about life with Merle and Buck and her life. I thank the Lord for having Bonnie in my life. I miss her dearly, but Im sure shes singing again. Thanks Bonnie for the time, caring and loved you showed to me and my family

Bonnie first touched my heart when I was only 9yrs old. My daddy had come home from off the road with Merle, and brought a christmas present that Bonnie had sent to me.

It was a PJ Barbie doll, and I will never forget it, because I hadn't even met her, yet, and she thought enough of me to send me a gift before she even knew me. I don't know why it meant so much to me, but it did. After I met her I loved her. She was the truth of what a person is supposed to be in life. She gave nothing but the purest of love, happiness and joy for humanity to each and every person she came into contact with.

She was an angel on this earth and will be truly missed.

Love and hugs, Robin

I always loved hearing Bonnie sing and perform with Merle Haggard. My friend and I talked with Bonnie in Macon, GA a few years ago when she was singing with Merle Haggard. She was so gracious to us and acted as if she had known us forever. We recently saw Merle in Macon, GA a few days after Buck died and it was a kinda sad show. They said Bonnie had been under the weather but I had no idea she was fighting such a battle. She is in a better place now but we will all miss her sweetness here on earth. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all her family.
