Glenn Ashby Obituary

Glenn H. Ashby 1924 - 2008 Dr. Glenn H. Ashby, Ed. D, Member Educational Honorary Phi Delta Kappa Glenn was born September 17, 1924, in Long Beach, California and the family moved to Phoenix when he was only a year old. He lived in Arizona the rest of his life, passing away on Sunday, August 10, 2008. Glenn used to say, "He was the oldest non-native Arizonan living in the State." He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Eva Rebecca Clardy; daughter Mary Rodema Ashby, Albuquerque, NM; son, William Glenn Ashby, Sacramento, CA; granddaughter, Kate Moseley, Columbia University, NY; sisters Alice R. Mc Daniel, Prescott Valley, and Christine I. Dudley of Kingman, AZ, and nieces and nephews too numerous to list. He was preceded in death by his parents, Polly Rodema Mendenhall Ashby and Paul Revere Ashby of Christopher Creek, Arizona. Also, sisters Barbara and Janet and brothers Paul, Robert, John, Norman, Clayton, and Lee. Glenn attended Creighton School, Phoenix Union High School (PUHS), where Glenn was elected freshman class president and graduated from North Phoenix High School. In May of 1938 his parents purchased the CI Ranch located in Christopher Creek, Arizona. Following freshman year he worked on the CI Ranch and studied through PUHS correspondence school. He entered the Navy in July of 1943 where he attended diesel school and was assigned to the mine sweeper YMS-473. Glenn traveled to Pearl Harbor, Midway, Guadalcanal, Tulagi, Guam, Okinawa, Korean, and many other Pacific locations. The YMS-473 received a battle star for four operations during September 1945 to February 1946. Glenn was discharged from the Navy as a MoMM First Class in April of 1946. Thanks to the GI Bill, Glenn enrolled at ASU and graduated in May of 1950 with a BS in Accounting and a minor in Elementary Education. In August of 1950 he was hired by William T. Machan, the long-time Superintendent of Creighton School District as an accountant and part-time teacher. On August 13, 1951, Glenn and his wife were married in Boulder, Colorado. The two met in the 6th grade at Creighton School where their friendship began and their love affair grew throughout their lifetime. During this time Glenn and his wife worked as partners to build Christopher Creek Lodge. In 1954 Glenn became the Controller for Creighton. Glenn continued his education receiving his MA in Elementary Education in 1956. He also became very involved with the Arizona Association of School Business Officials (ASBO), first as Treasurer and then as President. Glenn served on numerous committees to improve the professional standing of school business officials, became a life member of the International Association of School Business Officials (IASBO) and was awarded a Registered School Business Certificate, in 1965. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the IASBO in 1976. He continued his education at ASU and achieved his Doctor of Education in 1979. Glenn and his wife became charter members of Shadow Rock Church, was the scout-master of blue ribbon Troop 260, and was Co-founder of the Christopher Creek Homeowners Association where he served as President. Glenn especially loved classic country music from the early 1930's, enjoyed fly-fishing, traveling, hunting, back-packing, and golf. He led a happy life proud of his service to his country, to Creighton, and his fellow man. A Celebration of Glenn's life will be held at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, August 16th at Messinger Mortuary Chapel, 7601 E. Indian School Road with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Guests are invited to a reception immediately following in Messinger's Courtyard Reception Room. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2929 E. Thomas, Phoenix, AZ 85016.

Eva Rebecca, it is too bad that it takes a time like this to make contact. You were always a favorite topic of conversation for Mom. I wish we had gotten acquainted over the years...perhaps there will still be an opportunity when in Arizona.
We are thinking of you at this time of your loss. Reading Glenn's obituary lets me know that he was a very special person.
