Not sure what to say?

April 18, 2014

I love talking to Mr. Van at the Lark, and then Baja Reds. We had much in common from the military perspective and shooting (although I was not in his class as a shooter, by any means) I will miss him, but I'm glad I got to meet him.

My deepest sympathies to his family.

Peggy,

It was with a great deal of sadness when I learned of Van's passing today. I first met him in 1965 when we were both shooting on the Tactical Air Commnand Rifle Team. I was stationed in Virginia at Langley Air Force base and Van was stationed at Luke Air Force base here in Arizona. I drove from Langley to Nellis AFB to where the team was assembling. When I got to the barracks where we were being assigned during the training session, Van and C.J. Adair was standing outside. I had just purchased a 1965 Ford Mustang and Van said that he would like to take it for a drive. He just did not say where. After about four hours he and C.J. came back to the barracks. I guess the ride to the strip in Las Vegas plus what ever stops was where they
were. Over the next number of years we competed on several command teams and became friends and teammates. I went to Vietnam in the latter part of 1965. On a trip to Clark AFB in the Phillipines, I found that Van had been assigned there. It was great to see him again. I am not sure when Van retired from the Air Force, however we did meet again when I was assigned to Luke AFB, in 1975. When he was in charge at the Black Canyon Range, I had the opportunity to see him quite often. Peggy, you might remember the Indian jewelry at the range and the speed that it had to be hidden.
I have given Van's information to the Air Force Shooting Association that he can be added to the "Final Relay" that is a memorial record of the Marksmanship Instructors and Competetive Shooters that have passed on. I know that everyone who had the privilege of knowing Van and his family will dearly miss him. Rest in peace my friend.

I worked for Lloyd, and he worked for me. I always respected him as an honest hard working individual. May he rest in peace. He was a pioneer in the shooting sports arena in Maricopa County. We are all better off because of his dedication and knowledge. Rest in Peace.

Dear Peggy and family,
Our history goes way back but the absence of years does not lessen the loss of Lloyd. He will be missed.

We had the best military conversations and laughs over a drink. His favorite karaoke song was TGIO... and he was always there to say Hi when I came home from over-seas. Going to miss him dearly. My prayers are with Peggy and the family.

It's been many years since the last time I saw or spoke with Mr. Van...I loved his stories and always looked forward to his nightly visits on my shift at Baja's. Prayers to the family
