Mark Kamps Obituary

Mark F. Kamps, a much loved, highly respected supervising sound editor at Technicolor and adjunct professor in the Recording Arts Department at Loyola Mary-mount University (alumnus class of '84) died on Thursday, August 23, 2007. He was 44. Mark will not just be missed; his passing will leave a hole in the lives and hearts of so many. Those who cherished Mark include his students, who considered him a mentor, friend and an inspiring force. Mark encouraged his students to pursue their dreams wholeheartedly and taught them to capture emotion through sound. Also his colleagues, who sought Mark's company and regarded him as a visionary, who not only delivered his work with precision and artistry (on time and yes, on budget), but also a passionate craftsman who sacrificed his free time to share his skills with independent filmmakers. Mark was also an extraordinary photographer with an affinity for capturing the Salton Sea; he showed his work at several distinguished galleries. He was an empathetic, nurturing, emotionally generous and honest friend known to hoodwink with out-of-the-blue, dry quips and sharp (and sometimes twisted) observations. The singular memory of Mark that will resound forever is his laugh. That laugh, that whole-body, from the depth of his soul, infectious laugh. Mark was born in Phoenix and was a graduate of Brophy College Preparatory (class of '80). His early dedication to hard work allowed him to attend both Brophy and LMU only by paying his education costs through their student work programs. Mark achieved much in his professional career. He was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Miniseries, Movie or Special for his work on the miniseries "Sleeper Cell" and "Desperation" in 2006, and the TV series "The Pretender" in 1999. Other projects he worked on as supervising sound editor include television shows such as "Beverly Hills, 90210" and the TV series "Empire", "Brotherhood" "Dexter" and "Criminal Minds". Mark is preceded in death by his mother, Nancy Kamps. His family resides in Phoenix and he is survived by his father, Richard, his companion, Lucile, brothers Eric and Spencer, sisters-in-law Diane and Lisa, and his nieces and nephews: Clint, Chelsea, Charlie, Annie and Maggie. His family will deeply miss his wit, love, and dedication to others. Services are on Friday, September 7, 2007 at 5:00 PM at Brophy Chapel, 4701 N. Central Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85012. Services will also be held in Los Angeles. The Kamps family invites all who wish to attend and celebrate Mark's life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to a scholarship in memory of Mark F. Kamps, at LMU in the School of Film and TV, specifically for Recording Arts. Checks should be made payable to Loyola Marymount University. Please note on the check that the donation is for "Mark Kamps Scholarship" and mail checks to: Loyola Marymount University, c/o Melissa Navaroli, 1 LMU Drive, University Hall, Suite 2800, Los Angeles, CA 90045.

Richard, Eric, Spencer and family,

I am deeply sorry to hear of your loss. I wish I could have paid my condolences in person. Unfortunately I just heard the news today. What I remember most of Mark was his sharp wit and great sense of humor. He was a bright individual who will truly be missed.

God bless you all.

Even though it saddens my heart to know that I will no longer see his lovely smile and kind eyes, I am blessed to have met such a genuine, smart and hard working gentleman and to be able to keep his beautiful smile with me~

I worked with Mark at Technicolor in Los Angeles for more than 7 years and just wanted to echo what so many have already said: Mark was a truly nice human being. And I don't think you can say anything better about a person. When I started supervising I spent a couple days trailing Mark around learning the ropes and he was not only a dedicated artist but a teacher who enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others.

And I'll remember that laugh well. When Mark Kamps heard something that he thought was funny, everyone in the building knew it.

We'll miss him a lot...

I remember Mark as a young boy in Phoenix. (Our mothers were docents together at the Phx Art Museum). My heartfelt sympathy is sent to all his friends and family.
