Sad to hear about Monica's passing.. she was so beautiful inside and out... we were in the 5th grade together and then i recognized her right away 11 years later at American Express traing class for customer service....

Jane Powers

August 6, 2010

Twenty one years ago I moved from NY to Phoenix, I was wondering if I had made the right decision, I was homesick and I felt like I just did not fit in. However, at that same time, I was hired on with American Express. Monica was one of my first close friends that I had met, she had invited me to a Super Bowl party at her parent’s house. I recall driving down the street but there tons of cars all over so I was not sure which house belonged to the Soto’s. I parked my car and I saw this big tall man on the sidewalk and he asked me, “Can I help you?” and I said “yes “ I am looking for the Soto house and the man replied, “well who are you?” I said “I am Janie Powers and I am friends with Monica” his reply was: “ Well, I am Monica’s dad and you better hurry up and get in the house and get yourself a beer” As I walked in the house – there were coolers lined up everywhere, completely filled with beer. From that point on I knew I had made the right decision to stay in Phoenix. I did however, place a call back home and told my parents that I found parents that knew how to throw a better party than they could. That super bowl party was the beginning of a 21 year friendship.

Many of people knew her as Monica,, however her American Express friends called her Cha Cha. Let me explain,,,, there were 4 of us that were inseparable, Yvette, Brenda, Cha Cha and myself. There was a time that the 4 of us travelled to Vegas for some fun,,,Monica’s signature was her beautiful, always perfect long brown hair. We never knew the details of how she managed the perfect hair until Vegas. I remember a ton of girls in the room and I walked out of the bathroom and I saw Monica with this huge (borderline weapon) comb and she was teasing her hair,,,,,,I screamed Oh My God,,, Monica has a Cha Cha comb. Hence the name stuck.

One last memory, Monica was not really into exercise or physical activity. So just to even suggest trip out to the Bay area to run an 8 mile run would have been out of the question. So Yvette and I kind of did’nt tell her all the facts about our girls San Fran adventure for fear of her not going…so we just told her that we were going out to visit some of my friends. Well, of course Saturday night rolls around, and we were out doing our community service and just socializing with people in places that sold alcoholic beverages. Well,,,, Cha Cha and I were having a real good time and mother hen Yvette said “Girls, come on we got to go” I do believe it was 3am—and we had to be at the race at 6am. Cha Cha still had no idea what was in store for her. So we woke up Sunday AM with 2 hours sleep and we told Cha Cha to get dressed, we had a surprise for her,,,, now mind you, she only packed these little Keds sneakers. We parked the car and headed for the starting line,,,,, her face was priceless but the words were even better,,,,,,, I am not going to repeat them,,,but I can tell you they were not the Hail Mary nor the Our Father. She did tell me she was going to head back to the car and go to sleep until I told her it was a fun run and there was a keg of Bud light beer at every mile point. At that point she agreed. We really did not run the race but we crossed the finish line together. I feel like we have all run the race and crossed the finish line with Monica now.

In closing, Johnny Rod, I know you were the sparkle in Monica’s eye. I remember when she 1st met you and she told me that you were a football coach, and I said “Oh no, are
we going to have to act like we like sports now?” I remember her saying, for this guy I will learn to like it and she did. Monica was about everyone else, never about herself, she literally was in the hospital apologizing to us for not returning our calls or our
text message’s. She never once complained—and God only knows how much pain she was in.

Through out all of this I have struggled with all the “Y’s” and the “What if’s” but I know that God has taken one more beautiful person and has created another angel to watch over all of us. Monica will be reunited with her dad and I am sure that will make Monica so peaceful. Monica was always the strong one, she always aware of everyone else’s feelings and she never liked to see any of us cry. Sally summed it up best to me right before Monica passed, she said,,, It’s okay to cry Jane but Monica’s spirit will live on in all of us.” I am going to hold on to those words until I see her again. I only hope that I can be half the friend to others as Monica was to all of us.

Now doing as we always did best: “Cheer’s” and Happy Birthday Cha Cha until we all meet again—

I love you and miss you
Janie

To the Soto and Rodriquez Families,

It has taken me some time to find the words I wanted to say to you regarding the loss of our dear, Monica. I know that as time passes the pain will ease, but missing her will be hard to overcome. You will hear that she is in a better place and out of pain. That is what we say at a time like this to comfort the loved ones left behind. I don’t know that hearing it helps very much with the ache you feel when you just want to talk to her, or put your arms around her and give her a big hug. It is at those times, I feel, when God, his Divine Son Jesus and the Blessed Mother are most present with us, to comfort us and hold us, not in body, but in spirit. I hope when you feel that ache you will open your arms be comforted by all of them. Know that Monica is with Jesus and she is telling him all about her wonderful and loving husband, her devoted mother, sisters and brothers and everyone who loved her on this earth and those she loved.

With the care and the love that you showed Monica all her life, and especially in these last seven months, God will reward you for your service and care to his beloved servant, Monica. May we all be blessed to have a husband like John, a mother like Sally, and siblings such as Cathy, Eddie, Phillip and Sylvia, and so many people to show us they care and send us off to Heaven in such a glorious manner as was given to Monica. It was a beautiful service to add to our memories of her too short life.

May God bless all of you always.
Love you,

Eva Rohr

I knew Monica to be kind, thoughtful, gentle and funny. We lost touch after I left Amex several years ago, and I was deeply saddened by the news of her passing. I pray that family & friends will find peace and be filled with hope.

My deepest condolences to the Soto-Rodriguez family.

Monica and I worked together from 1987 to 1990. Have not seen her since.

I think it is a testament to the special person that Monica was that her memory still lives in others even after 20 years onward after the briefest encounters.

It has been over a week and it is still hard to find just the right thing to say. These messages are inspiring and represent a life lived to the fullest. I have worked with Monica for over 10 years and i have never seen her without a wonderful smile on her face. I also have a cabin near hers up in Munds Park and it was so nice to see her walking with family in the late afternoons, again with that smile on her face.

That is how I will remember Monica. She brought joy to so many people, every day.

My thoughts go out to her family in this unthinkably difficult time,

John, in this time of loss, may you find strength in family; courage in the quiet hours, comfort in the love all around you, and may you be guided by hope and faith in God.
We who were blessed to know Monica in our lives knew her to be warm, loving, and kind. Whenever we met, I could count on a hug & a smile; she was simply one of the kindest people I have ever known.

Afterglow

I'd like the memory of me
to be a happy one
I'd like to leave an afterglow
of smiles when life is done.
I'd like to leave an echo
whispering softly down the ways
Of happy times and laughing times
and bright and sunny days.
I'd like the tears of those
Who grieve,
to dry before the sun
Of happy memories that I leave
when life is done.

we are grateful for the happy moments we as a family have shared

Monica, you were not only my cousin/sister but my best friend for over 40 years. We made great memories together and shared unforgetable fun times! Thank you for always being there I couldn't have asked for a more supportive cousin. From our Barbie days to family camping trips, picnics, slumber parties, our wild and crazy high school years, you being my maid of honor and Godmother to my son, you were always there beside me. I took great pride in introducing you to my cousin on my dads side, John, the true love of your life, and because of the chemistry you and John shared we were able to enjoy more fun times as we tailgated and took rode trips as you were coaches biggest fan! Your laughter and sense of humor will be missed by all who were lucky to have shared in your life. Watch over us all until we see you again. Say hello to little boy for me. I Love you Cuz!

I first worked with Monica in 1989 at 24th St. & Lincoln Amex. She was a beautiful person inside and out. After that, I saw her occasionally in the lunch line, the most recent last fall. She was just as friendly and caring then. Her leadership in Ahora at Amex fit her, and we were blessed to have her. I did not know she was sick but glad she is not suffering anymore. I will miss her and I will keep her loved one's in my prayers through this time of great loss. Theresa Martinez

Monica and I went to Alhambra together. We were friends, not best friends, but friends. Even then, you could tell that Monica was a kind soul. She never had a bad word to say about anyone. You knew she had your back, no matter what. When I saw her last July it was like no time had passed, and we were back in Mr. Russell's govt class. Monica will be missed. It is our job as her friends, to keep her memory alive. We must take comfort in the fact that she is with her father, and free from pain. We will miss you Monica. My thoughts go out to the family. Monica and I grew up on Marlette Ave for a short time and attended both grade school and high school together. I still remember her bright smile. Rest in peace. Sincerely, Kara (Larremore) Kohnke

I'm shocked and saddened to hear of Monica's passing. I went to high school with her at Alhambra High in the 80's and even though we weren't close friends, I was acquainted with her and I will always remember her bubbly, happy-go-lucky personality! She always seemed to brighten up the room wherever she was!

I hope her family and loved ones will find comfort in knowing that she is no longer suffering and that she is laughing and smiling that bright smile I remember from way back then. Her Lord is taking care of her now. Rest in peace, Monica

Safely Home by Unknown

I am home in Heaven, dear ones;
Oh, so happy and so bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light.All the pain and grief is over,
...Every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
Safely home in Heaven at last.Did you wonder I so calmly
Trod the valley of the shade?
Oh! but Jesus' arm to lean on,
Could I have one doubt or dread?Then you must not grieve so sorely,
For I love you dearly still;
Try to look beyond earth's shadows,
Pray to trust our Father's Will.There is work still waiting for you,
So you must not idly stand;
Do it now, while life remaineth--
You shall rest in Jesus' land.When that work is all completed,
He will gently call you Home;
Oh, the rapture of that meeting,
Oh, the joy to see you come!

My deepest condolences to Monica's family. My prayers and thoughts are with you all.
