Not a day goes by that something doesn't remind me of Sue Ellen. So many of us who are deeply involved in prison ministry, especially here in Arizona, remember her involvement in educating the public about the issues facing those trying to re-enter society after prison. And, boy do we need her voice now as current legislative efforts seek more ways to incarcerate individuals. Punitive measures are increasing despite our work encouraging restorative justice practices. Sue Ellen always seemed to have a way with people and was very convincing when speaking to members of government; something I sadly lack. I miss her laugh, I miss her positive attitude, I miss her help in our battle against the carceral state. I just plain miss her.

When I first met Sue Ellen Allen, I was brand new to prison ministry. I was in awe of her poise, her skill as a communicator, and her passion. I wanted to be just like Sue Ellen. I went to as many of her events as I could because it was like drinking from the fountain of youth to be around her. I always left rejuvenated, reinvigorated, and recommitted to helping those affected by incarceration and the ladies in Perryville Women's Prison in particular. Her book "Slumber Party from Hell" has a broken spine, torn pages, and is well thumbed. And it's my third one since I'm constantly giving them to others with the exhortation, "You gotta read this book! It will change your life." She changed my life. She filled it with blessings, purpose, and joy. I will continue the fight, Sue Ellen, I promise.

Sue Ellen was an exceptionally kind, caring, and joyous spirit. She had a way of inspiring everyone she touched. She will be greatly missed, but her memory, her legacy, and her extended family will endure. So much love for this one-of-a-kind soul.

I had the pleasure of being Sue Ellen's next door neighbor for the past few years. She was a wonderful neighbor, my favorite in fact. I always enjoyed stopping and having a chat with her when I had the opportunity. Sending my condolences to her friends and family.

I only knew Sue Ellen briefly, but in that short time she had a lasting impact. I was young when I met her, dealing with the hurt of my mother being incarcerated. I lacked communities at that time who shared that experience. But then I met Sue Ellen. She welcomed me in. She gave me space to talk about my mom, to process the experience of her incarceration, and encouraged me to find ways to use that pain as fuel for something better. She never knew how much I needed that at the time, how life giving it was to have the space she created. What a gift. I know it is one she has given to countless women.
Thank you, Sue Ellen. I'm sorry I never told that to you while you were still physically here.

Sue Ellen had a huge impact on my life! From the first time that I met her in 2006 she was always full of life. She was determined to make a difference. She did do that and her legacy will live on forever. She touched so many lives and I will never forget her spunk. Fly high with the Angels my beautiful friend and know that you’re loved and will be missed.

Sue Ellen provided one of several stops along the path of my education on the criminal justice system, the critical need for reform, and support for those in the system and re-entering. When I saw a notice that we were honoring Sue Ellen, I was thrilled, until I realized we were actually memorializing her. Her passion and compassion will be sorely missed. Our community has lost a bright, bright light.

Sue Ellen was such a lovely, kind, empathetic woman. Simply put, she was an intelligent presence in any conversation she entered. I have fond memories of hearing her infectious laugh during game nights at Stacey's house. Thank you, Sue Ellen, for sharing your sense of humor and vision for justice with the world.

Sue Ellen was my sister in orange. She was the one person who did not judge anyone based on outward appearances; she judged you based on your character as a person. Her best attribute, was her VOICE, and she used it until she couldn't. I stood beside Sue Ellen many times at the capital, I volunteered on several occasions for her Re-Inventing ReEntry classses, I celebrated with her, and I cried for her. I will miss talking with this amazing person. As stated in the article, Rest in Power, Sue Ellen; You have an eternity together with David.

Even though I never met this woman, somehow I came upon her obituary and was so fascinated by her legacy that I bought her book! She will continue to be an inspiration! As she pointed out, she believed that people were put her in her life for a reason. I feel as though it wasn’t an accident that I came upon her obituary. I wish I got to meet her. What an extraordinary woman!
