William Whitaker Obituary

Whitaker, William Sr.
William N. Whitaker Sr., devoted husband, proud father, driven businessman, rugged cowboy, singer extraordinaire, involved civic leader and enthusiastic sportsman all combine to describe Bill. Scottsdale resident, formerly lived in St. Paul, MN. Born August 1, 1924 and died peacefully February 25th in Scottsdale AZ. Survived by loving wife Susan, sons Bill Jr. (fiancée Patty), Jack (Sue), Chuck (Julie), Doug (Kathy), Steve (Shannon) and stepchildren Stephanie Linnenkamp (Brent) and Bill Gillen. Also survived by sister Patty (George) Selover, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and first wife Jean Ambler. Preceded in death by parents Floyd and Esther Whitaker, and sister Mary Jane Karr. Bill was truly larger than life - his love for his family and friends, radiant smile, warm handshake and commanding voice gave him a hearty yet friendly presence wherever he was. He grew up in Minneapolis, attended Washburn High School and the University of Minnesota. Inspired by his father's hard work in the automotive business, Bill worked for the Stephens Buick Company in Minneapolis, earning a sales manager position while still in college. His success there led him to purchase Midtown Motors on University Avenue in St. Paul in 1954, which was the beginning of Whitaker Buick. At just 30 years old, Bill was one of the youngest GM Dealers in the country, and received numerous Sales and Service awards over the years. He took a personal interest in both his employees and customers that created a culture of loyalty seldom found in the industry. Almost 60 years later, Whitaker Buick GMC continues as a family business in Forest Lake, MN. He served on the Boards of Director for many organizations, notably serving as Chair for the MN Auto Dealers Association, Better Business Bureau, St. Paul Rotary Club, and was active in many other civic endeavors. He firmly believed in giving back to the community he served. Other organizations close to his heart were Ducks Unlimited, Boy Scouts of America, YPO, Osman Shrine and Carefree Rancheros. A cowboy at heart, Bill was an experienced horseman, and enjoyed many extended rides with his friends and family in both MN and AZ. This interest also led him to purchase acreage in Hugo MN in the late '50s and 'the Farm' was a great source of joy to Bill whether he was horseback riding, planting trees, duck hunting or renovating the log cabin that would be his homestead for a number of years. He enjoyed many yearly adventurous family reunion trips, and never one to relax on vacation, Bill was always looking to play another round of golf, a last set of tennis, or share a cocktail and story around the fire pit. He loved to sing, and could recall a song on most any topic, serenading 1 or 20. Retirement led Bill and Susan to the warm weather of Scottsdale, where he was able to enjoy riding the desert, more golf and tennis, and the company of his many friends. Bill's integrity and positive spirit left an influence on those who knew him, and will be greatly missed. Happy trails, partner. Services will be Friday March 1st at 1:30 pm at the Scottsdale Bible Church Chapel, 7901 E. Shea Blvd, Scottsdale, AZ with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Courage Center of MN or Hope & A Future of Phoenix AZ. A memorial service will also be held in Minnesota in June. Details to follow.

Condolences to Susan and all the children and rest of the family. I just now found out about his passing nine months ago. I am one of ten cousins on his dad's side and tried to keep in touch over the yrs but difficult as I am 15 yrs younger and I guess not too much in common other than family. I do remember his delight when I sent him an old letter that his dad Floyd had sent to our grandfather from the trenches in World War I. Can't even imagine the fear that must have been going through a young man's heart at such a time with so many dying. Peace and God Bless the whole family from one of the two remaining first cousins.

What a guy!!! Met Bill 40 years ago aboard a horse. His singing around a campfire or a piano lounge turned into a sing-a-long every time. He liked a good horse, good friends and a little gin. Happy Trails my friend

My first day as Bill's secretary started on my birthday in June of 1977. Little did I know at that time that it would be the best gift I ever received on my birthday.

This great man taught me so much through the 10 years I worked beside him. What he taught was not something you could learn in college, he was extremely firm, but fair. I always knew where I stood with him, never any surprises. For those of you who worked with and for him know exactly what I'm saying. Imagine that kind of education with no student loans, instead he paid me. Plus, he opened his home to me in Carefree which I had the pleasure to vacation at several times with my friends.

My role as his secretary ended when the New Car Sales Manager recruited me to hit the showfloor and try my hand at selling cars. I was a little unsure, but being the generous man that Bill was he told me I could work for him in the mornings and then hit the showfloor in the afternoon and evenings. He said "if it's not right for you, there's always a spot open for you as my secretary". Needless to say, everyone knows this successful partnership and happy ending - I married the Sales Manager!!!

I worked for the Whitaker family for 25 yrs. and I must say it was the most memorable years of my life. Every August 1st, I would think of Bill and hope that he was enjoying his birthday and that he was doing well.

My heart felt sympathy goes out to the entire Whitaker Family, and to those who had the pleasure and honor of knowing this great icon.

Here's to you Bill - "martini straight up", rest in peace!

The Canyon Clubhouse will never be the same without Bill's late night serenades. Always a gentleman with a kind smile. RIP Bill.

There will be sadness in the coming days yet there will be an equal amount of hilarity and smiles from the stories that will be told - I will share in both. Now back together again, I bet Norb and Bill have already picked up a few bucks from their old "I can guess the serial numbers from the dollar stuck to my forehead" ploy they used to pull and have already sung a few songs or put on a few acts to a ready audience. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family.
