Thomas Chacon Obituary

Thomas Roberts Chacon

On Monday, January 20, 2020, Thomas (Tommy) Roberts Chacon passed away at the age of 79. Tommy, known fondly as Dina to his loved ones, was born in Winslow, AZ, to Herman and Olive Chacon.

Tommy gave a life of service, retiring from the United States Forest Service after 37 years. At 18, he began his career as a hotshot, while attending Northern Arizona University. He graduated in 1969, with a Bachelor's Degree in Forestry. He followed his passion in forestry, moving to multiple locations in order to advance his career, promoting to District Ranger and ultimately retiring in 1995. However, retirement did not settle him down. He continued his life of service taking positions with Job Corp America and working with numerous tribal governments.

He married the love of his life, Linda Martinez, in 1967, and so began 52 years of family and adventure. He loved hunting with his sons and grandchildren, and spent every free moment in the woods. He loved spending time with his family and friends and never missed a party. After many adventurous years, they moved back home to Winslow. And yet, Dina still did not slow down. He became a member of the Winslow City Council, and served his community for eight years. He continued to work with tribal governments and joined the historic Hashknife Pony Express. When Tommy wasn't in the woods, you could always find him and his wife at the casino, with Linda winning (most of the time). He was known to enjoy a good steak dinner while discussing the world and sharing stories.

Thomas - husband, father, Papi and friend, are only a few of the names we knew him by. He was quiet, wise and thoughtful; always putting others first before himself. With the knowledge he possessed and the stories he shared, he would capture a room. He was always willing to give a lending hand to family, friends and anyone in need. Thomas was truly the patriarch we all looked up to. Everyone would listen when he spoke and laughed when he joked. His love of the outdoors was contagious and evident in the legacy he left behind with his children, grandchildren and the many others he inspired. It's not what he did do, but what "didn't he do," that described his life and adventures.

Tommy was preceded in death by his father, Herman, his mother, Olive and his grandson Gregory.

Tommy is survived by his wife Linda, his four children; Angelique, Athena Astraus (Mitch), Thomas R. Chacon Jr., Jason Chacon (Shannon), and nine grandchildren; Alexandria, Billy Tom, Morgan, Madelyn, Marcus, Carley, Steven, Abigail and Sofia. He is also survived by his brothers Dan (Carolyn) and Joe (Kate) Chacon. Additionally, he will be missed by countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

At Thomas' request, no services will be held.
