James Eckmann Obituary

JAMES JIM CLARENCE ECKMANN

February 29, 1948 February 6, 2024

James "Jim" Clarence Eckmann, of Bakersfield, CA was peacefully called to Heaven on February 6, 2024 at age 76. Predeceased by his parents, Emil "E.C." and Dorothy Eckmann (Gladden). He leaves behind his wife of nearly 50 years, Donna Eckmann; his son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Nicole Eckmann, granddaughters, Taylor and Maddie of El Dorado Hills, CA; his daughter and son-in-law, Jillian and Kevin Kalin, granddaughter Aspen and step-grandsons Aiden and Gavin of Round Rock, TX; his sister Joan Ryan (Eckmann) of Liberty Hill, TX, along with many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Jim was born on February 29, 1948 in Bakersfield, CA and raised in Shafter, CA. He was a graduate of Shafter High School, Bakersfield Junior College, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, obtaining his Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. After college, he returned to Shafter, CA to follow in his father's footsteps in farming. At the age of 32, he suffered from kidney failure and faced an uncertain future. His dearly loved sister, Joan stepped up as a match and selflessly became his kidney donor. The family is forever grateful for the years Joan's sacrifice gave him. Jim was known for his entrepreneurial spirit, which led him into many different business adventures. He really enjoyed people, and made friends wherever he went. Jim was a devout Lutheran. He and Donna attended St. John's Lutheran Church of Bakersfield for many decades. He was also a strong believer in supporting our military veterans and encouraging younger generations to become interested in agriculture. As a youth, Jim spent his summers in Laguna Beach with his family. He enjoyed it so much he continued this tradition every summer with his own children, and later brought his grandchildren. He took great pleasure in the outdoors; hunting, fishing, farming, and traveling with his family and friends. He selflessly dedicated his life to taking care of his family, who meant everything to him. He was well-loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A memorial Service will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church at 4500 Buena Vista Rd, Bakersfield, CA 93311 on Saturday, March 23rd at 10:00am. The family asks, in lieu of flowers, you may make a donation in his name to the National Kidney Foundation or FFA

Jim always made you smile and laugh with him . Seems I recall he put his boat in the river just off their property AND he and my husband , Chuck , pulled a surfboard . One of the guys was on that surfboard. I wasn't there but just imagine 2 Brown adults doing that! Donna , I'm so thankful for your friendship and happy memories. God Bless your wonderful family. Jim was a good guy i remember buying produce off of him in the eighties and we always crossed paths through the years mostly out in Shafter at the Generals drive inn. Always had a lot of laughs. Our condolences to you Donna and your family. Dick and Julie Young.

Jim had the most happy personality and wonderful laugh. He told us the story of his very young son said he'd fed the dog . Later Jim found the freezer door open and the butcher paper on the sidewalk . I believe Donna had just filled the freezer with fresh beef. With much love Janet Ruth
