Juanita Elizabeth Mendez-Castro, aged 88, passed away on August 17, 2025, in Bakersfield, CA. Born on June 24, 1937, Juanita dedicated her life to her family and community, touching the lives of many with her warmth and generosity.

Juanita was a familiar face in Bakersfield, having served the community as a waitress at several local restaurants including Sinaloa, Mexicali, Far East Cafe, and Cielito Lindo. Her bilingual skills were also a great asset in her role as a translator for The Department of Human Services, where she helped countless individuals navigate through challenging times.

A graduate of Bakersfield High School, Juanita was deeply rooted in her community. She was a devout member of Guadalupe Church, San Clemente Church, and St. Joseph Church, where she participated actively in church activities and formed lasting relationships.

Family was the cornerstone of Juanita's life. She was a loving mother, survived by her daughter Veronica Leyva and sons Johnny, Ernest, Gilbert, and Gabriel Castro. She was preceded in death by her daughter Judy Castro and her parents, Manuela and Antonio Mendez, as well as her six sisters.

Juanita's hobbies included playing board games and enjoying a diverse range of music, activities that she loved sharing with her Granddaughter Rosemarie Gomez (her care provider), family and friends. She was often filled with laughter at family gatherings.

A wake will be held on Thursday, September 4th from 4-8 PM, and a funeral service on Friday, September 5, 2025, at 9 AM at St. Phillip Catholic Church. The services will conclude with a graveside burial at Greenlawn Mortuary, where she will be laid to rest.

Juanita's life was a testament to the power of community, faith, and family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
