VAUGHN HANSEN
February 21, 1947 - December 11, 2020
After graduating from Bakersfield High School in 1964, he enlisted in the Coast Guard and served on the U.S.S. Whitebush stationed in Astoria, Oregon. He began his career as a mechanic keeping the engines running. While enlisted he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. Upon the end of his enlistment, he moved with his wife, Irene, back to Bakersfield. They settled in East Bakersfield and he continued his career repairing buses, cement equipment, fire trucks, and more, finally retiring as a Bakersfield City Fleet Supervisor in 2005.
Vaughn was a jack of all trades and excellent DIY-er - from simple home repairs to major projects, including woodworking. He taught his daughter the basics of car maintenance and home repair. His projects included building custom bedroom furniture, bookcases, kitchen cabinets, and garage cabinets; building a patio, pouring cement, re-tiling showers, and installing siding on the house. He worked from sunup to sundown and we affectionately called him "the energizer bunny."
He was known by friends and neighbors as the "go to" for questions and advice on home and auto repairs. He was happy to share his knowledge, loan a tool, and lend a helping hand. He not only kept his house in tip top shape but also kept his mother-in-law's house going and then his daughter's house.
He was loved and is missed by his wife, Irene; his daughter Deena and her husband, Brian; and his grandson, Lucas.

I remember the day we went up in Greenhorn mountain to gather firewood. That was a good day! I remember Vaughn as a very nice person who was easy to be around. I think it was the only time I actually met him.

Vaughn was a wonderful neighbor pal of mine. We played basketball in his back blacktop area and played touch football with the boys from across the street in the front. He was a kind and gentle friend that was easy to be with while I was a tomboy!

The Hansen family lived two doors up from my family on University Avenue in the very early 1960s. I was just a little kid ~ and I have clear memories of Vaughn being a kind, patient, bright, considerate guy. Emphasis on the “bright”! My mom enjoyed his occasional visits when on leave or back in town, always involving much talk and much coffee.
Farewell and following seas, Vaughn.
You leave behind a wonderful light.
