Dear Kathy, Burke, and Arthur,
I was thinking of your dad this morning, as I have often done over the last 37 years. Periodically, I would check the internet to see if I could find some news of him and/or you. This morning was different when the Baltimore Sun article popped up first. Memories came flooding back into consciousness of the ten years I worked for your dad at the University of Maryland and especially the last three, when I was his secretary, replacing Peg after she passed. All of them of the fondest nature as I can still hear his voice in my head: "Well, Jan, I see you have your tardy shoes on again today....", "Cover your typewriter, Jan, we're going flying today", and "Dr. David (my future husband and resident in Ob/Gyn at the time), don't you have someplace else to be?", when he would casually stop by the office to see me. He was the best boss a girl could ever have and my only regret was that I had to leave him in his last year before retirement to follow my husband when he finished his residency. I will never forget the look in his eyes when we said goodbye. He was a wonderful mentor with many words of wisdom that I have passed on to my son and often quoted to many others. We stayed in touch for several years by letter and then lost track somehow. He was a good friend; I have missed him dearly all these years and today find myself in mourning and miss him even more, even though I always knew this day would eventually come. It is a sad time for all of us who knew him and loved him.

Kathy, I am so sorry to hear about your dad. At least he was able to live such a long life & you had that much time to enjoy with him. (which is often not the case) I know you were so close to him & that this is a deep loss. Hope that all the wonderful memories you have will keep him alive in your heart forever! With deepest sympathy, Jean Rowan Haddaway

Dear Kathy and family, We love to think of you parents taking their evening walks at Farleys and stopping to visit with us. They shared stories of staying at our cottage when they were young in medical school with their friends. They represent why Farleys has been such a special place to vacation for years. We remember two summers ago watching you get your Dad in the boat for a ride that we're sure he cherished. You did everything you could to help him enjoy the lake even when life was a challenge. Please extend our sympathy to your family. We feel honored to have been a summer neighbor to such a distinguished Doctor. Take care of yourselves now. George and Ellen Schaffer

To my dad, my buddy, my pal, and my mentor.. I miss you more than you will ever know. Well,. maybe you do know, because we shared so many words with each other. We shared so many times together... good times and bad times. You taught me so many things, even though you didn't know you were teaching me, at the time. You were always a gentleman. Opening doors and pulling out chairs for women, until the end. I couldn't be more proud of anyone as I am of you. You will always be in my heart. I love you!

Kathy, you're in my thoughts today. I know this is a sad time but your father lived a wonderful life and raised a great daughter. You were the best caregiver and I know you will miss him.
