Janet Perlmeter Obituary

PERLMETER , Janet S. On October 7, 2008, Janet S. Perlmeter, beloved wife of Stanley E. Perlmeter of Key Biscayne, Florida, peacefully departed this life. She leaves behind three devoted sons, Jeffrey, Michael and Rex; two adored daughters-in-law, Rosemary Perlmeter and Rachel Hertzman; nine cherished grandchildren, Amy (Brian) Thomas, Cari (John) Rabroker, Dan (Katie) Horwich, Hunter, Cody, Jacqueline, Sarah, Mitchell and Nathaniel Perlmeter; and five prized great-grandchildren, Ava Rabroker and Jacob, Ella, Alexis and Kylie Horwich. She was the daughter of the late Regina and Saul H. Shapiro of Chicago, IL. After graduating in 1948 from the University of Michigan, she spent over thirty wonderful years in Omaha, NE, raising her family and actively involved in a variety of community organizations. She took special pride in her efforts as President of Temple Israel Sisterhood, and later as President of District 20 of the North American Federation of Temple Sisterhoods (Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, South Dakota and Colorado) and as a member of the National Board. She enjoyed as well her service as chairperson of the Junior Golf program at Highland Country Club. After moving to Key Biscayne, she was active at Temple Israel of Greater Miami, where she was named Volunteer of the Year in 1992. In Florida, she joyfully took up golf again and treasured precious time with family and dear friends. But, above all, the center of her life was her love for the Apprentice Seaman who fell for her at first sight on the night of December 2nd, 1944 with whom ultimately she shared 60 years of a blessed marriage celebrated in an unforgettable family gathering a few short weeks ago.
A memorial service will be held at Temple Israel of Greater Miami, 137 NE 19th Street, Friday, October 10 at 1:00 P.M. Following the service, the family will receive in the Meeting Room of Tower II at the Ocean Club on Key Biscayne. Please omit flowers. Donations may be directed toward the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (https://www6.miami.edu/campaign/gift/onlinegiving.html?unit=79) or the Rabbi Rex D. Perlmeter Lifelong Learning Fund at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation, 7401 Park Heights Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21208.

Dear Rabbi Perlmeter,
I'm pretty sure you don't remember me, but you were the Rabbi for both my Mother and my Father's funerals. I don't think you realize how comforting you were to me, in what I consider to be, very unusual circumstances. I know you've helped so many at their sad times, & I just wanted to express my condolences. You are a very special person, and I'm very sorry for the loss of your Mother.

What I saw in Janet was a fantastic
wife, mother and grandmother.
The largest picture on Stan's office wall was a picture of a beautiful young
bride. That said it all.
