Jean McGowan Obituary

Jean McGowan, a resident of the Brightwood Community in Lutherville, passed away on November 30th, two months shy of her 100th birthday.

Jean was born in Jersey City, New Jersey on February 7, 1923, to Fred and Pauline Carlson. After graduating from high school her family moved to San Diego. It was there that she reconnected with her future husband, Robert McGowan, also a New Jersey native. After her marriage to Bob, they returned to New Jersey. Due to Bob's job, Jean, a homemaker, set up homes in Detroit, Cleveland, Baltimore, and Richmond. After Bob's retirement from CSX Transportation, they returned to Baltimore.

Jean loved spending time with her family and especially time in Ocean City, New Jersey. Jean and her sister-in-law started the "Beach Week" tradition in 1956.

What started as four adults and five children has grown to almost seventy people.

Jean never missed a beach week until 2020. She will be remembered by her immediate family and her many nieces and nephews during this summer's annual gathering.

Jean is predeceased by her parents, her husband and a son, Christopher McGowan.

She is survived by her brother, Robert Carlson, of Colorado; her children, Robert (Mary) McGowan of Baltimore; Susan (Robin) Price of Boise, Idaho; Matthew McGowan of New York City and her Daughter-in-Law, Paula McGowan of Virginia Beach. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Robyn (Frank) Roblin and Scott (Heather) McGowan, both of Towson; Blake (Valerie) McGowan, Taylor (Taylor) McGowan, both of Virginia Beach; Heather (Nick) Asby of Chicago; and Kiara and Ailisa McGowan, both of New York City. Together, her grandchildren have added eight great-grandchildren to her legacy.

I am so fortunate to have known Mrs. McGowan. She was a good friend to my mom and welcomed me to her home in Virginia on several occasions. She was so much fun - with a great sense of humor. And, of course, one of the best shoppers I have ever met. I will miss her.
