Please accept my deepest condolences. As per my colleague David McCulloch, I really enjoyed the pyro chemistry courses at Washington College, with the crab dinner evening. Dr Conkling was such an intelligent, caring and nice man. My thoughts are with you, from the Canadian Explosives Branch, Ottawa, Canada.

When you are a brand-new professor with the ink still wet on your diploma, you find yourself on the faculty and one of your first tasks is to figure out the culture of the place. Who typifies the best ideals of that institution? Who should be your role model? I was lucky to have John as my mentor. We ran together, talked together and from John I saw what a College professor could be and should be. To the outside world he was an international expert on pyrotechnics and a productive scientist. To his students, he was a skilled instructor who encouraged them to be their best. To his colleagues and friends John was all of the above but also simply one of the finest people you could ever meet.

My deepest condolences to all his family. For kindness, intellectual brilliance and practical competence, decency, reliability--John numbered among the finest I have known. He has left us far too soon but his memory will always be a blessing.

My deepest condolences to the Conkling family. Sandy and John were my family's neighbors on Byford Court for many years. He and his family were so supportive of ours during my grandparents' deaths (Dr. and Mrs. David Donovan) and my mother's cancer diagnosis and death (Julia Donovan). My mother was especially fond of Dr. Conkling and she was so happy to see him at her surprise 60th birthday party before her cancer diagnosis. Sending lots of love and prayers to the Conkling Clan.
