John Young Obituary

Died peacefully on Sunday, March 12, 2023 at 94. Born on April 9, 1928, to John A. Young, Sr. and Ruby (Brown) Shiloh and predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Ingoglia.

Raised in Baltimore, Jack will be remembered for his honorable service in the armed forces, his life experiences, his leadership in the Masonic Order, and his love of the Baltimore Colts and Ravens. Jack was everyone's friend--a storyteller and jokester who believed in hard work and living life to its fullest.

A veteran of World War II, Jack proudly served his country as a sailor in the Merchant Marines from 1943-1945, helping carry war supplies to the fighting forces in Africa, Sicily, and Greece. In 1950 he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he attained the rank of Sergeant and was stationed in Germany with the 17th Signal Operations Battalion, European Command. During the Korean War, Jack transferred to the Army Reserve, and his Honorable Discharge was awarded in 1956.

For 43 years, Jack had a successful career with the Baltimore Gas & Electric Company, working as an electrician, lineman, foreman, instructor, and later as General Supervisor (he retired in 1991). In his "retirement," he enjoyed part-time employment with the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks until the age of 92.

Jack was a 53-year member of the Masons. He was raised at Ionic Lodge in 1970, served as the Worshipful Master in 1976, and continued to teach Masonic Catechism until 2020. He was a member of the York Rite, Scottish Rite, Knights of Mecca, and Boumi Temple. In the Grand Lodge, Jack was appointed Grand Inspector, Senior Grand Warden, and Deputy Grand Master. In 2003-2004, Jack was honored to serve as Most Worshipful Grand Master of Masons in Maryland. His legacy was focused on dedication, fellowship, and charity.

Jack will be dearly missed by his beloved wife, Cheryl M. Young, daughter Barbara Corliss and husband Steve, daughter Patricia Mattheiss and husband Brian, five grandchildren, Stephanie, Michael, Stephen Jr., Jeffrey, and Daniel, and his half-sisters Kathleen Brown and Daynie Showacre.

A memorial service will be held at the Grand Lodge of Maryland, Friday, April 28 at 7:00 pm.
