Michael Menzel Obituary

Michael W. Menzel passed away April 13, 2020 in his home in Baltimore, Maryland. A doting son (William and Josephine Menzel) and brother (preceded in death by his siblings Philip J. Menzel and JoAnn E. Thoman), Michael was an extremely giving and loving man who enjoyed reading, classical music, B&W movies, helping others, and his beloved airplanes. Michael would rejoice in his opportunities to share his joys of airplanes, art, and architecture with his nieces and nephews. He was never one to not appreciate natural beauty. Michael would often share his stories of his Baltimore Sun routes out along Maryland's Eastern Shore; commenting on its serenity and splendor. As a Sun driver for over thirty years, he had many stories from that area of the state; including how he helped a chicken cross the road. Michael was a member of the 175th Air National Guard (early-mid 1960's) and served honorably as an airplane mechanic. He had a way of lighting up a room, no matter the event. Michael could make you feel like you're the only person in the room. His undivided attention included stories, allegories, wisdom, jokes, and love. He will be missed, and is survived by his two sisters, Virginia L. Smith (Kelly A. Smith) and Kathleen F. Sawyer; along with countless nieces and nephews, and an innumerable amount of friends, acquaintances, and confidants. Rest well, Michael.

I’m so saddened to learn of his passing. I grew up calling him Uncle Mike & that’s how I will always remember him.
I have wonderful memories of visiting DC with Uncle Mike & my cousin Bryan. I last saw Uncle Mike when my son Jack was a baby, he’s now 15. I sure wish I could have seen him again.
Thank you for being such a wonderful Uncle. Rest In Peace & hope you are giving my Dad a hard time.
Love, Susie

Mike offered many hours of service to St. Wenceslaus Church at Ashland and Collington Avenues, especially prior to Christmas setting up their 'stable'. I had the pleasure to help him. He was a perfectionist! He will be missed.

I was visiting my elderly Aunt one day at a nursing home and Mike walked in the door with lunch for everybody. His Mom had stayed there, but had passed away. Mike still came to visit those residents. He knew everybody by name and told jokes, involved all of them in lively conversation. Everybody was having a good day and it was all because of Michael. I had been going there 8 years and never saw anything like this. What a great guy. He will be missed by many.

Mike was a true friend and a great guy. I never heard him say anything negative about anyone. I known Mike since childhood. We worked together at Sears. He was a true Catholic and helped in St. Wenceslaus Church. Mike will be missed by everyone. Rest In Peace Mike
