ROCHESTER , Dr. Stuart I. On Wednesday, July 29, 2009. DR. STUART I. ROCHESTER of Burtonsville, Md. Beloved husband of Shelley Rochester. Loving father of Jason (Kristen) Golomb and Molly Rochester. Twin brother of Marty (Ruth) Rochester and brother in law of David Harris. Devoted grandfather of Jordan, Reed and Braden.
Funeral Service will be held on Friday July 31, 2009, 11 A.M. at Tikvat Israel Congregation, 2200 Baltimore Road, Rockville, Md. Interment following at Judean Memorial Gardens, Olney, Md. Memorial contributions may be made to JSSA Hospice, 6123 Montrose Road, Rockville, Md. After the service the family will receive friends at the late residence. Shiva services will take place Sunday Monday and Tuesday evenings at the late residence. Arrangements entrusted to TORCHINSKY HEBREW FUNERAL HOME, 202-541-1001.

I learned only yesterday of Stu's death, in the Loyola College alumni magazine. We were classmates in Loyola's class of '66, and this news shocks and saddens me. Stu was a great scholar and a lovely person, and his death came much too early in his life. My sincere condolences to his wife Shelley, his brother Marty, and his whole family.

I was Dr. Rochester's student at Loyola College, now many years ago. He was a wonderful, engaging lecturer and even better as a mentor who prepared me well for graduate study in history. I am so sorry to learn of his death, which comes much too soon.

I was shocked to hear of Stuart's passing. Although we had lost contact, I fondly remember playing basketball with him back in the 80's. He was a fierce yet kind competitor and I always enjoyed our post game chats.

I was so surprised when I heard of Stuart's death. I only have fond memories of having worked with him at the Pentagon in the Historian's office years ago. Please accept my sincere heartfelt sympathy on his loss. I trust that you will be comforted by the precious memories of his life and the years that God allowed you all to share with him.

Alexis de Tocqueville commented on democracy in America more than 170 years ago. One of the many characteristics he noted was the tradition of the New England town meeting, which all citizens are expected to attend and participate in.

Stuart Rochester, a distinguished historian and senior Federal executive, understood the importance of citizen participation in government and was a model which all of us would do well to emulate.

Stuart had a profound respect for those who governed, but he also had a vision for the community which he shared with all who could help accomplish it. He persuaded and wrote letters, testified at hearings before the County Council and the Planning Board, and did everything in his power to make democracy continue to work. He understood the need for improvement and change, and the need to respect and abide by consensus decisions unless they were changed in an open and transparent manner. His family and fellow citizens are very proud of his accomplishments, and the rest of us can only wonder at the energy and enthusiasm he brought to this labor of love.

I am so sorry to learn of Stuart's death and want to wish you my condolences. I had the pleasure and honor of working with Stuart many times on transportation study efforts over the years. His was always an educated and inspired voice for reason, often during otherwise very vitriolic debates. He will be missed!!

Shelley and family--- Stuart was such an asset at Shaare Tefila Congregation for his community planning expertise. He could so easily see the right direction to go. He was so easy to work with, as a fellow member of the Congregation Men's Club "It's Academic" quiz team. His sports knowledge added a lot. It was a real pleasure to talk to him. May you only remember the good times you all had together!
