Darrell Wayne Baker of Friendswood passed away on November 27, 2015 at the age of 86. The son of Marion and Sadie Baker, Darrell was born on October 10 th of 1929, but historians generally agree that his birth played only a minor role in the stock-market crash later that month.
Though he played many roles and wore many hats in his life, it was in the red and white hat of Santa Claus that he will best be remembered; for more than twenty years, "Santa Darrell" brought holiday joy to countless children at Almeda Mall, the Galleria, and Baybrook Mall. Visit the home of a longtime Houston area family, and chances are you'll see Darrell smiling from a picture on the wall or mantel.
Darrell was also a top-flight dog breeder for more than 55 years and in 1988 his own Great Elms Prince Charming II became the first and only Pomeranian to win Best In Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show-- the most prestigious contest of its kind in the world. He also helped found the Pomeranian Club of Greater Houston in 1969, and was an active member for years thereafter.
As if this weren't enough, Darrell also served on the Deer Park City Council and worked over three decades as a production manager at ARMCO Steel.
He is survived by his daughters Jeri' Goldsmith and her husband Bobby of Friendswood and Toni Hodges of Friendswood; and by his beloved grandchildren Brittany Turner and her husband David Turner of Houston, Barrett Goldsmith of Los Angeles, and Baker Goldsmith and his husband Justin Smith of Houston. No story about Darrell Baker can be complete without mentioning the love of his life, Olga Moore Baker, to whom he was married for more than 65 wonderful years. Their love and devotion was an inspiration to all who knew them.
He will be missed by all those who knew him and spent time with him, even if only for a few minutes in December.
No service is planned at this time. Donations can be made in his name to the local Pomeranian Rescue Organization, secondchancepoms.org

I do believe it is safe to say, this particular Santa was a staple in the homes of so many throughout Houston.
He had a magical spirit that would radiate in us a children. He helped us to believe! I am now 35 w a family, and how I wish my daughter had the chance to meet such a kind and "magical" man! His legacy will be untouchable and definitely never forgotten. My last visit to him was in 1997, my senior year. I have almost 18yrs of photos w darrell, 18 wonderful Decembers!
Santa, you were a true blessing to us all and your magical twinkle will always make us believe!
To his family, Thank you so much for sharing him and allowing all of us into his life.

I remember sitting on his lap as a child. I am now 43 and my daughter sat on his lap too for many years. My mom always said he was the only Santa that looked like Santa. He will surely be missed.

In memory of the greatest Santa!
You made Christmas special, especially for our oldest daughter who knew you as our neighbor in El Cary! It was your summer home when you weren't working at The North Pole!

I'm so very sorry to hear of Darrell's passing. He was a great man, a great neighbor, and a great Santa.
I know he will be missed by so many.
What a legacy he leaves! Loved by so many all over Houston!
Darrell and Olga were our neighbors in El Cary for years. My daughter would walk down to "Santa's", after Christmas, to leave a note or cookies on his porch . Mostly thank you notes or love notes. Alex loved Santa and was convinced she knew the REAL Santa because his summer home was just 2 doors down. Magic! Pure MAGIC!
Some of the sweetest moments would be when Darrell would stop, out in the street, and say "We saw a little something in the porch and we knew Alex had stopped by!". If Alex was outside she would scream "HI SANTA!!". There was usually a big hug!
A couple of years after we moved to Clear Lake Forest, I contacted Santa to see if he could possibly swing by our Christmas party and take pics with the kids. He was EXHAUSTED after being at the mall, but when he came up the back walk ... The kids were dancing and in awe! He sat with the kids for photos and it was SUCH a magical night! We LOVED him and do to this day!
I now wish I had taken the kids to the mall every year (even as college kids) to have their photos taken with him.
The following year, Darrell was unavailable and we had a "Santa imposter" at our party. Alex would bend over and whisper to the other kids ..."sorry , that's not the REAL Santa!".
I told Alex , of Darrell's passing .. She's now 26 yrs old. All she could say was "NOOOOOO!". We had a tearful evening.
Darrell Baker was a huge part of Christmas for my family! The world lost a great man.
Godspeed Darrell! You get to rest and enjoy Christmas from above!

Legitimately just cried hearing of this passing. This is the man that I believed was THE REAL Santa Claus. He also happened to be our neighbor growing up in our first house. I wrote him thank you letters every year after Christmas, and letters all throughout the year while he was at his "summer house" and not working at the North Pole, obviously. R.I.P. my Santa Claus! This spirit will be greatly missed by many.

I am so greatly saddened to hear of Darrell's passing.
He and Olga were our neighbors, in El Cary , for several years. My daughter was convinced she KNEW the REAL Santa! In our hearts... She DID!
One Christmas , after we had moved to Clear Lake Forest, I called and asked him if he could possibly don his Santa gear and come to our house for a Christmas party! He sat with each child for a photograph and it made my daughter's DAY to have Santa at the party. She loved him so very much! Another year we had a different Santa because Darrell was booked on the day of our party. Alex sat the entire time telling every child "Sorry, that's not the REAL Santa!".
When we still lived in El Cary, on a couple of occasions , my daughter, Alex, would walk down to Darrell and Olga's (Santa and Mrs.Claus) and leave a note a couple of days after Christmas. A thank you note for Santa!
I know Darrell will be missed by so very many kiddos!
I just told my daughter he had passed. Although she's 26 now... She looked at me and said "Noooooo!".
She still loves him.
My sincere sympathy .
Sincerely,
Mandy Atkins
