Paul Nama Obituary

1947 - 2016 March 14, 1947 June 3, 2016 Paul was born in Houston, Texas, as the middle child of Bernard and Selma Naman. It was at a young age that Paul began cultivating his sarcasm and intelligent wit that continued throughout his life. He excelled on the Lee High School debate team before attending college at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. After graduating, Paul followed the advice of a psychology professor and attended the University of Texas at Austin School of Law to hone his debate skills. As an attorney at the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office and then the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Texas, Paul served as lead prosecutor in many high profile criminal trials. National media outlets such as Time Magazine and Newsweek often reported on his work. His prominence as a prosecutor led to an appointment by the United States Attorney to the National Church Arson Task Force and Paul spent a year in Washington D.C. investigating and prosecuting these cases on behalf of victims. In all, Paul spent over thirty (30) years serving the people of Jefferson County as well as the citizens of the Eastern District of Texas. With his wife, Gaye F. Naman, of forty-two years, Paul raised two children in Beaumont and was actively involved in many activities, including serving as President of the Little Dribblers Basketball Association. Paul and Gaye retired to Georgetown, TX, to live in the peace and beauty of the Texas Hill Country. In Georgetown, Paul enjoyed the outdoors taking his beloved dogs on long walks and participating in daily swims. Papa also adored spending time with his four (4) grandchildren and laughing at the youthful energy they brought. His lifelong interest in politics continued as he actively followed national politics as well as campaigning on behalf of local politicians and political causes. Throughout his life, Paul held a strong principled belief in fighting for victims of injustice. Paul is survived by his wife, Gaye F. Naman, of Georgetown, TX; his son Barrett Naman and daughter-in-law Erin Naman of Houston, TX; his daughter Samantha Stone and son-in-law Daniel Stone of Austin, TX; his four grandchildren: Riley Naman, Lillian Stone, William Naman and Natalie Stone; and his siblings David Naman of The Woodlands, TX and Barbara Naman of Hurst, TX. Memorial donations may be made to the Austin Humane Society. Arrangements made under the care and guidance of: Ramsey Funeral Home 5600 Williams Dr. Georgetown, Texas 78633 (512) 869-7775

Paul and I shared a rather rickety up the back steps, third floor falling apart apartment our sophomore year at Northwestern. I was saddened to learn of his death, far too young, but reading about him I was not all surprised to learn that he lived an outstanding, generous and loving life. That's the kind of guy he was at Northwestern. He seems to have been a total success in every way, both personally and professionally. And he lives on in his children and grandchildren - and in the many people he helped in his legal career.
My deepest sympathy to his friends and family.
